Evening guys, I'm currently doing some research into the fear of public speaking (or speech anxiety) as part of an assignment I've been given and require a little help, if you guys would be so kind If you've got 5 mins could you complete this short survey for me? Due to the nature of the subject, the survey is completely anonymous although if you have any experiences you wouldn't mind sharing, a PM would be great...again, in total confidentiality. Any cooperation would be a great help Thanks H http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XJXXKTN
Done H But had a bit of a problem with question 2 - every time I clicked a column I had ticked before it deleted the previous tick (if that makes sense). So to clarify my answers for question 2; I ticked 'never' for every part of the question except for the following where I clicked 'rarely' - 2, 11 and 12. If it helps, I have a lot of experience with public speaking as I am a university lecturer who frequently speaks in lecture halls to 100+ students, and also a musician who has played guitar and sung in front of audiences numbering from the 10's to several thousands! When I started lecturing about 15 years ago I had already been a professional musician for 12 years so was used to the possibility of making a tit of myself in public; but that first lecture, to an audience of 156, was pretty nerve wracking and I have to admit to suffering most of the 'conditions' in question 2 of your survey, but it got a lot easier with time. Nowadays I suffer very little from nerves of any kind, but do get a 'buzz' and adrenalin rush from talking to large groups of people. As I have said before, I am very used to performing or talking in front of large groups of people and usually find that smaller groups can be more intimidating; there can be a certain anonymity where large groups are concerned - with smaller groups you can see every single face, and their reactions (real of perceived) to what you are saying. Hope the research go's well mate - what's it for if you don't mind me asking? And if you want to quiz me further feel free to PM!
H, I don't do much public speaking at all so pointless me filling in your survey, good luck with it all the same.
cheers cartoon great feedback too... I'll have to look into those gremlins on that site. Its the first time I used it so I might have messed up somewhere...its been known The research is going great thanks...Most of the data I'm finding though is USA based so I thought I'd run a small survey of my own to see if there is any comparison. It's a fascinating subject (to me anyway). I'm working for a training provider delivering BTEC IT diploma and Essential Skills training to adults looking to get back into work. Part of the ES BTEC is the guys have to give a presentation on a chosen subject as part of the Powerpoint module and a lot of them are struggling to complete the module due to the public speaking. After speaking to my manager, I landed myself the assignment mentioned above to collate as much info and compile a report and presentation for the management/directors with the aim of including a session on Presentation Skills and techniques as part of the module rather than just give the guys the module and let them go at it blind so to speak. I agree with you re: the buzz and adrenalin rush from delivering to large groups. My first was in front of approx 300 and I think I could have ticked every option in the survey. 10 years later its now become second nature Its a great feeling to be able to help somebody who's so nervous they cant speak be able stand up and deliver a short presentation or speech with just a few simple techniques
Agree 100% with all you say H and good luck with the good work - must be very satisfying to instil people with the confidence to give presentations! One of the modules I teach is Business Planning and one of the lectures concerns presentation techniques - would be glad to email you the powerpoint presentation I have written if you think it may be usefull. Keep up the good work - seems like you and me are doing the same job - is very rewarding to be a part of the process that enables people to reach their full potential, however small our input may be! So keep on keeping on mate!
Done H I don't enjoy public speaking but it has been a necessity for my jobs over the years so I have got used to it. The best tip is there is no substitute for preparation, preparation and preparation and then more preparation. The more preparation you do the better you will be and the less you will fear the task. I also like to throw in a bit of humour but that can come back and bite you if no one laughs.
no problem taff... thanks anyway absolutely mate . That would be good to compare content...I'll PM you an email address re PPT...thanks
Agree totally Blue - 'Fail to prepare - Prepare to fail!' Thorough preparation is absolutely essential - if you don't put in the work before hand then you will fail!
I've had to make a few changes to this survey due to the site restrictions but all responses prior to editing have been recorded
