I've noticed we haven't considered loan moves recently.

Since we've come into the premier league, apart from the HBA loan deal which only covered the 3 games he was available before his leg break, we haven't really gone for any loanies!

I see transfer discussions around here all the time, and sources linking us to players. But no one around our club seems to consider loan deals?

If we can't snatch a player in a specific position on a permanent deal, why not loan one for the season?

Even the biggest clubs get loan players in.

What would be wrong in signing a player on a loan deal?

There's a lot of talent out there that clubs don't want to let go, but want them to be able to develop and get experience, or maintain match fitness.

Loan deals could also end the argument about paying too much wages.

We could get players in that would cost us too much in wages on a permanent signing, but we'd be able to sign them on a season long loan and agree to pay a percentage of their wages.

I wouldn't mind signing Adam Johsnon on loan from City. He'll get a lot of game time here, plus we could agree to pay 40k or so of his wages, and I reckon he'd easily pay back the money we'd pay in performances.

There's plenty more we could look at as a temporary signing, that could help us in our campaign.

Considering the possibility of loan deals could be beneficial and stop us from stressing about signings.

There's no value for money in loan deals. A premier league to premier league loan normally sets you back around £3m not including wages, for a season.

e.g. Sunderland. Everyone they've loaned has ****ed off after playing for them, either to another club or back to their parent club. It's cost them a fooking fortune to loan these players in and they've got **** all for it. The only benefits from a loan deal go to the player and/or the parent club.

Doesn't help the long term plan.

Loans mainly happen at the end of a window if we're short in certain areas and not been able to strengthen. Or if we've just gone and sold a star player on the last day of the tranfer window - not that we'd do that sort of thing. <whistle>

Possibly, but it gives us time to see if we like them/they like us. As HMT says, I'd love Adam Johnson here for a while....

True. We had Benni on loan for a while and that worked out.

Helps develop players from other clubs, which could potentially harm us in future, and unless there's a decent buy out clause at the end, it's expenditure without any resale value.

I'd be worried we would end up like sunderland who had too many players on loan a couple of years ago, if they get recalled by their clubs you could lose the nucleus of your team

The club have already said they don't see the value in a loan signing. I'd be very surprised if we brought anyone in on loan.

Agree. It has to be the exception due to circumstance, rather than an ongoing policy of bulking the squad up on the cheap.

Tash, don't forget Ashley was still in charge when we were in the Championship and we had a fair few loans...

    Danny Simpson
    Paddy Van Arnhold
    Marlon Harewood
    Fitz Hall
    (may have been more)

We also took Steven Ireland on loan in 10/11 and he was dogshit...I don't think we're opposed to it, but why pay out 2-3m in extra wages, when you could just push youngsters forward? If the right loan came along (loan with an option to buy) then why not, but aside from that, I'd rather look more long term!

Ah, Arnold! Now with Cole & Bertrand ahead of him and the Debuchy deal going quiet, maybe we should be back in for Arnold as LB, with Santon on the right.
