http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...e-Wenger-Ill-never-spend-big-for-Arsenal.html ARSENE WENGER insists he will never change the way he operates at Arsenal — even if his star players keep leaving. Wenger and the Gunners board are under fire over Robin van Persie’s decision to quit because he cannot see the club challenging for trophies. But Wenger follows football legend Johan Cruyff’s mantra that you can win the Champions League without splashing out millions. The Dutch legend laid the foundations for Ajax’s Champions League glory in 1995 and helped establish Barcelona’s trademark style through the Spanish giants’ academy. And Cruyff believes you can still be successful using a good youth set-up and by recruiting talented young players. Gunners boss Wenger said: “I totally agree with Cruyff — and I won’t change. “The only sad thing is that sometimes your work is destroyed by others. You want to see a player in his prime doing it for your club. But it does not work like that all the time. I am a victim of that. I lost Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas at an age where they should have been playing their best football for Arsenal. But I never left the club when I could have. I could have left 10 times to join another club but I didn’t because I have worked with the same vision and philosophy at Arsenal for the last 16 years — and that won’t change. Besides, money was never a motivation for me. And, in a similar way, people like Cruyff don’t put all their energy in building football teams with young players just for the money. “We all do this because we want to give something back to football. Neither that, nor buying Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud for a combined £24million this summer was not enough to satisfy Van Persie. The Dutch striker's contract runs out next year and he will not sign a new one. He said: “I had a meeting with the boss but unfortunately it has again become clear to me that we disagree on the way Arsenal should move forward.” RVP’s revelation led to an avalanche of criticism and even calls for Wenger to quit. Wenger admitted: “The emotion is over-ruling analysis now. Every word is being enlarged to ridiculous height. Millions of people have an opinion now on it all.” Fair play to Wenger, he has his ideals and he's sticking to them. Not that i agree with some of the things he does, but a lot of stuff he does is right. But i hope he remains dignified when put under increased pressure of being unsuccessful, because he gets it now and it will only increase as time moves on.
I can't cant see any quote by Arsene Wenger saying "I wont buy big" Typical **** journalism by a rag that's printed by scabs
I haven't really seen much anti Wenger sentiment over this though, not like in the previous cases. I think this time it was different as RVP's non-satisfactory performance over 5-6 years in another club would probably mean he would be transferred to some mid table German club a long time ago. But Wenger kept faith with him, and he leaves after 1 and a half great seasons for us.
If anything to me it has proved that more than any other person, Arsene embodies Arsenal. All others will come and go.
I read somewhere else about how RVP was happy to sign a new contract when he was injured in 2009.I just hope we sell him ASAP and move on as a club
Although he doesn't say it in this article, he generally doesn't agree with buying big. He believes in his financial model and is sticking by it.
The point i'm making is that scab rag is using "I wont big" as a headline whereas Arsene Wenger has not been quoted a saying it
Of course, these dirty rags will say whatever to sensationalise things. It's a shame that we have no quality control of these newspapers. If there was, we would have very few to pick from....
I have control over that scab rag.I never do and never will buy it.It's the Morning Star (incorporating the Daily Worker for peace and socialism) for me
I do not get it when a player joins a title-winning club to win titles. What is so ambitious for RVP to join ManCity, who will surely carry him to titles? Trying to win titles with Arsenal is much more ambitious in my book. Same goes to Wenger. I do not get it when people accuse him of lack of ambition. To try to win titles and to make it his own way is super ambitious to me.
Wenger has already made big signings in Podolski and Giroud, and we are still in the market for more. Everything was really going good for the first time, RVP sadly had to f--k it all up for us.
This. I hope we dont delay selling for an extra 3, 4 or 5 million. We should sell now and get what we can.
And we should of strengthened. 3 years ago when we had a side capable of winning stuff. But it is hard. Its not like the best players are for sale very often. We need to buy potential and actually get it right. Wenger has got it wrong in recent years and the scouting system now seems to be a laughing stock in comparison to other clubs. And even if we do go for the right players we also seem to miss out on signing them with regularity.
That is what makes it worse. It felt like we were doing everything right in this transfer window. Buying in new players, selling/loaning out the deadwood, and then RVP had to go and do what he did. **** sakes.
We wouldnt have to BUY BIG if we just kept hold of our best players. There's nothing wrong with the way we sign players -ITS THE SELLING THAT HURTS US. Hypethetically speaking imagine if we had kept our best players over the last seven years but still continued with the sane transfer dealings. --------------------Szcezney-------------------- Sagna-----Kos/Mert-----Vermaelen-----Clichey ------------Diarra---------Wilshere------------- -------------------Fabregas---------------------- Nasri-------------VanPersie-------------Podolski BENCH: Adebayor Toure Walcott Arteta Song Giroud Mannone/Almunia That's a squad strong enough to win titles without a single signing over the £15 Million mark.
Very interesting point my friend. This what we should have been, instead of always seemingly starting over again....
That's because he is pressured by the Board more than anything, he probably wouldn't spend big like City or Chelsea but he would buy far more regularly than he is now to replace the talent that we do lose.
Thanks, I just think too many people listen to the tabloids. Our scouting and buying has always been great (I'm sure Podolski and Giroud will do well this time round) but its the boards eagerness to cash in that is kept us in limbo and stopped us moving forward.
