From The Chronicle, make of this what you will...

ALAN PARDEW will persevere with hot prospect Nile Ranger as the Londoner aims to end his goal drought before the end of the season.

The United boss did not mince his words with the 20-year-old after the 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa. He admits there is much for young Ranger to work on before he can even think about attempting to emulate Andy Carroll.

However, Pardew has already revealed his admiration for Ranger’s raw skills in training and his ability to provide the element of surprise for defenders.

Ranger is on standby again for the clash with Manchester United in seven days’ time, but could find himself edged out by fit-again Stephen Ireland, who Pardew feels could play off the shoulder of a more physical striker.

However, reflecting on Ranger, Pardew told the Chronicle today: “He will be a good player for us and he could be a great player for us – but he needs to improve.

“That was his first start and he will learn from that.”

United were badly lacking any type of goalscoring threat at Aston Villa, and the weekend’s misery was compounded last night at Anfield when Andy Carroll netted his first goals in a Liverpool shirt after a man-of-the-match performance against Manchester City.

In contrast, Ranger missed a good one-on-one chance with Brad Friedel and was hooked 10 minutes before the end.

Pardew said: “Goals do change games.

“Nile had a big opportunity to either finish it or put Peter in.

“It is decisions like that he needs to learn from.”

Pardew also said there were plenty of other aspects of Ranger’s game which need to be addressed.

He added: “Down the sides against Villa when he was running at centre-halves was an issue too.

“His link-up play is also something he has to work on. He is aware of that.”

We haven't got much of a choice have we? I'd like to see him and Ireland together at some point though.

On another note, who'd have thought it was possible to miss Ameobi and Best so much?

A plethora of platitudes from Pardew paired with plenty of proposed progression for the proxy of the pony tailed prick who pursued the purse.

  3. Agree with Pardew, as seen with Sturridge, a footballer needs to be playing regular first team football. He needs regular starts and routine.

If you'd have said in November time that we'd be sorely missing Ameobi and Best, I'd have been asking which white powder you'd been on...

He isn't going to get any better by not playing games. But right now isn't the best time for us to be blooding youngsters.

Still, we have little choice. Get him on the pitch, and hope that he realises that if he grabs the chance by the bollocks and makes it work, he'll be loved by the Geordie nation and give himself a bloody good shout for being a first choice striker for next season. If he doesn't take the chance he'll know he'll either be on loan to a Championship club or warming the bench.

Make the most of this Golden Opportunity lad! Do us proud!

He needs a season out on loan. I know he's only had 1 start for us but that was enough for most of us to accept that he's a long, LONG way from being Premiership quality. We didn't really rate Carroll until last season (many of us, myself included, didn't think he could hack it with the big boys) and look at him now, a season in the Championship to hone his skills and he's England quality. Ranger clearly has raw talent, but he needs to be starting every game and scoring to bring that out. A season with a top-6 Championship team could be just what the kid needs.

Glad to see Pardew is sticking with him and not getting on his back, he clearly needs a confidence boost to improve, hes got all the attributes of a good striker he just needs more time, loaning him out next season would be the perfect idea really.

He's sticking with him now, come the end of the season there may be a different story.

Ranger to Peterborough for next season.

They play decent football like we do, and they seem to always score lots of goals... Not always culminating in wins mind you.

Alliteration angers audiences, afterall, arsey authors aren't awesome. Articles altered awkwardly appear average, anemic and are always annoying.

Really, we have to remember how many games it took Carroll to come good. Perseverance my friends.

He wouldn't play there. Even if CMS leaves, Lee Tomlin and David Ball sre top quality strikers who are easily better than him, and have experience.
