Newcastle United are close to sealing a deal for Lille’s France international right-back Mathieu Debuchy, but are not willing to increase their offer for De Jong, despite a lengthy pursuit of the highly-rated centre-forward.

De Jong is keen to leave Twente, but Newcastle will not offer more than £10m for the youngster and the striker is expected to move to Germany instead, with Borussia Monchengladbach his most likely destination.

With Leon Best moving to Blackburn Rovers earlier this week and Peter Lovenkrands released, Newcastle intend to sign at least one new striker before the start of a season which will bring the extra demands of a Europa League campaign.

Managing Director Derek Llambias travelled to South America last week where he is understood to have been trying to set up a deal for two young players from Argentina to join compatriots Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez on Tyneside.

But Pardew has urged the board to also back him this summer with players who are ready to go straight into the first team, with Douglas just one of the targets they have been watching for the last 18 months.

Although Newcastle have virtually agreed a fee with Twente, they will have to wait until August to complete a deal as the 24-year-old needs to spend another month in Netherlands before he is given full Dutch citizenship.

    Twente can shove it then.

We need to put all our effort into keeping Ba and signing Debuchy at the moment IMO.

    Agreed.

If we are willing to throw £10m at a striker we hope is as good a Ba, it would be worth tossing him a few shekels to withdraw the release clause and stay put

the only problem with that is then all the other players will want clarity with their wages

this could end up being even more costly

if ba doesn't sign simply get rid and replace

the current wage system can not be broken by any player

    simple as that
