C4 racing presenter and racecourse commentator has announced that he is taking a break from his racing commitments to undergo cancer surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. From Racing Post: In a statement, Derek Thompson said: "It's going to be very frustrating because after Royal Ascot there are so many top meetings coming up around the country that I would normally enjoy but I will continue watching them in hospital." Best wishes to him in his recovery.
Hope he is back fit and healthy soon, I know he's not everyone's cup of tea on commentary duties, but ive always enjoyed his commentary. It doesn't matter what grade the race is he always makes it sound exiting. 'And the favourites making ground'* Get well soon Tommo *
"Phoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooootttttttttttttttttooooooooo !!!! I'll leave that one to the judge"
What a shame to hear... Lets hope its been diagnosed early... Hope to see him back on tv, calling them winners home... Get well soon Thommo...
The very best of wishes go out from me to Derek ‘Thommo’ Thompson who in my opinion is one of the best broadcasters on our sport. His passion and enthusiasm for racing is unmatched and let’s hope he’s back and in top form very, very quickly.
This morning's paper said that his doctors wanted him in for surgery last week, but he refused to miss Royal Ascot. He has a tumour in his bowel and will be hospital for several days (operation this afternoon) and will be off for up to 8 weeks as he recovers.
You would think news like that would knock most people for 6, so to still do Royal Ascot was very brave*
