In todays newspapers, and on MOTD. it would seem Beckham has been basically shafted, by not being part of team GB, for the olympics. so to you Gary ****in Linniker. my response is...

Why play people who are not good enough.

do we want to win, or just showcase egos?

I personally would rather had Superkev than Beckham.

but it would seem that he is a bit special, the same man who has cost us in the past, by being red carded. psyco may just have called this one right. I also think his choice of over aged players, somewhere nearly right.

**** it david, you are going to get a knighthood anyway, but please use it when you have sex with your miserable lass.

The Olympics is an ideal opportunity to pick a side of youngsters and let them have their heads.

These kids will play with a point to prove , play without fear , and there will be a couple who would really shine.

Beckham and the rest of the Golden Generation have had their chance , let the new generation have theirs.

Sorry Bill but I have to take you to task here.

If all you think of DB's contribution to English football is this statement then you are 100% wrong. For 4 or 5 years, David Beckham WAS the English national team and the ONLY world class footballer we have had for 20 years.

He is an iconic global figure and certainly in the past 4 or 5 years his image and commercial power has overtaken his footballing prowess but as he is 37 that's hardly surprising.

During his playing days he was one of the worlds best footballers and he made ONE mistake when he was 22 years old (and does anyone REALLY think he should have been red carded for wafting air past that cheating Argie bastards legs).

Beckham has always given 100% when in an England shirt, never moaned when dropped, captained the country with grace, honour and diplomacy. He is a role model I'd be extremely happy for my kids to aspire to and has been an ambassador for good for this nation in and out of sport for the last 15 years. He mixes with the ordinary, the wealthy and the poor of the world with equal ease.

He is an easy target because he didn't enjoy a fruitful education but he has more than made up for that in his career and holds the kind of status usually reserved for pop stars, movie stars and world leaders. Lionel Messi is the worlds best footballer currently but if he was in the same room as DB, anywhere in the world (outside of Buenos Aires) then I know where the longest queue for autographs, photographs and just to see would be.

If there is any sportsman who deserves an honour its David Beckham and I will not jump on the 'lets get an easy dig' at Beckham just because he hasn't made the Olympic team.

Just for the record, I don't believe he deserves a place on merit and don't have a problem with him not being picked. However, as per usual, the grace and dignity that he handled this news to the Worlds media shows what a class man he is. Compare it to the graceless 'me-me-me' attitude of the Terry's and Ferdinand's of this world.

David Beckham - world class sportsman and person.

I agree with Cest here. If you are talking about the Olympic ideal - trying your best, making the most of your talent, being proud to play for your country and representing all that is the best of your sport on a global stage, then I do think that Beckham had a case. Otherwise why have him in the preliminary squad which gave him hope that he might be picked? That was cruel and he deserved better.

Pearce has not come out of this well in my opinion. Maybe there is something in what a caller to a Radio 5 Live phone in said the other day that, since Gary Neville is Beckham's best mate and has taken Pearce's place on the England coaching setup, he has taken the opportunity to stick the knife in.

Ever since Crapello afforded Pearce some status in the England set up he has come across as a bit of a dick imo.

I have always been a huge Stuart Pearce fan over the years, even whne it wasnt a popular thought but in the last 2 or 3 years, he seems to have let his status go to his head, which he never did as a player for club or country.

    Shame really.

On a serious note I think Becks is the best role model we have and gets so much unfair stick, most because of who he married. A good husband and devoted dad, still playing and enjoying it and despite the stick he gets about being a bit thick, a multi millionaire, ambassador, charity fund raiser who can mix with anyone, oh to be that thick.

Syd, I am struggling to name a better English sportsman, who achieved his world status and reached the successes and respect of his peers, anytime in my lifetime. The Charlton's, Moores and Hurst's where before my time really and Beckham has no equals in the last 30 years imo.

The bloke is just a fantastic ambassador and makes me far prouder of my country through his actions and achievements than the Royal family ever do.

No-one here is doing that. I agree he doesnt deserve a place on merit today and yes, new faces are the way forward, but he also doesnt deserve to be slated at every opportunity either.

Team GB coach Stuart Pearce has confirmed David Beckham could be on his standby list for the Olympics and is confident he would answer his call if required.

Pearce named his 18-man Olympic squad on Monday but the announcement was overshadowed by his controversial decision not to pick former England captain Beckham.

The 115-cap midfielder has been vocal in his desire to represent Great Britain at the games and his active role in the Olympic bid process meant he was widely expected to be involved as one of three permitted over-age players.

However, Pearce has opted instead to go for Wales stars Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy as well as Manchester City defender Micah Richards.

The former Manchester City boss has been forced to defend his decision, insisting it was done for footballing reasons, but did offer Beckham a lifeline.

Pearce names a four-man standby list on Friday and despite admitting he had "not got round" to asking Beckham about his potential availability, he is sure the LA Galaxy man would be willing to be named on it.

"I've not spoken with him [Beckham]. I've spoken with every other player and said, 'Look, that is the requirement we look for'," said Pearce.

You can forget the argument about bringing new faces in and "moving on" this squad is a one off it will not be repeated again. Great Britain will not be putting a team in 2016 in Rio. I understand why Pearce left Beckham out, but there is equally a decent argument why the 3 overaged players shouldn't have made it. Giggs opted out of international football last year, Richards would rather go on holiday than be on stand by for the euros, and Bellamy has a long list of misdemeanors .
