Bert van Marwijk(60) just announced his resignation as head coach of the Dutch national squad. After four years he quits the job. After a dreadfull performance by the Dutch on this European Championship the country was asking for his head. Both media, pundits and football legends questioned if Van Marwijk was able to remain in his position. And it appears to be that Van Marwijk caved in and handed in his resignation letter at the KNVB(Dutch version of the FA). Under the leadership of Van Marwijk the Dutch qualified without a loss for the 2010 World Cup in Africa and almost repeated that feat for this EC in Poland and Ukraine. But in the last qualifying match against Sweden the Dutch lost 3-2. As coach he led the Dutch to the Finals of the World Cup in 2012 and in March of this year his team defeated the English in Wembley Stadium, 2-3. The Dutch coach won the Uefa Cup with Feyenoord in 2002 and was the head coach of Borussia Dortmund from 2004 till 2006. In 2007 he returned to Feyenoord and in 2008 he replanced Marco van Basten as head coach of the Dutch team. Btw. just posting it here, the guys in the general section are douchebags...
Hardly a surprise, the Dutch media expected it and Netherlands were the clear underachievers of the tournament. Who is likely to replace him.
I agree with cbra. There was no news in Amsterdam that I saw as I tucked into my tea tonight. Although after a bumpy ride back a London supper ain't much better..
Likely candidates for the job: Ronald Koeman(already told the press he's not going to take the job) Louis van Gaal That's the end of the list...
Koeman would be the best candidate, though it would seem Van Gaal is likely and is a very good manager, even though I can't stand the man.
Brown wouldn't get tangoed, he'd get banjoed! The Dutch would lynch him up as soon as he set foot anywhere near the National team.
Who? And i very much doubt that the Dutch FA will go with a foreign coach. Last time we had one was František Fadrhonc from the Czechoslovak republic, he was the head coach from 1970 till 1974. All Dutch afterwards. Short list: Louis van Gaal Ruud Gullit Leo Beenhakker Frank de Boer Unlikely: Guus Hiddink Ronald de Boer Philip Cocu Jan Boskamp the pope Sanat Claus
Not that respected, lost a lot of credit with his departure in 2010 and his press conferences are even more dreadfull then those with Bert van Marwijk. I've seen some awkward press meetings with Van Marwijk and 9 out of 10 times they were utterly boring and useless. McLaren has the rare feat to talk on and on and say completely nothing relevant. 'We just have to score more then them, we just let ourselves down today and we'll have to how things go next week', etc etc.
