It is always horrible watching England, but I thought we would get through this but wrong pen takers, left footed is always ****, I would rather have Carroll and Terry take.

We should have got a goal tonight, Italy wasted their chances so the story should have been wrote for us to profit on it, but we didn't typical England.

It always falls their way (Germans) doesn't it. The Italians will be knackwursted after that.

Ash's penalty was dreadful that my grandmother could have saved and she's been dead for years. what was he thinking, there was no power and the keeper had all the time in the world to save the goal..dreadful display...

Yeah it was so obvious which way he was going and that he was going low, like he was waiting to see which way the keeper is going to hit it the same way, the keeper knew all day where he was going.

Shame Parker wasn't still on, he can take a penalty, if he had been the 3rd taker and scored it things might have panned out differently, oh well. Bring on the Olympics.

Parker was too tired but he could have given us more of a chance.

Disappointing end but a fair result. Pirlo was outstanding tonight and England never got close to him. Better than expected tournament and there are encouraging signs, especially the players playing with more heart than recent times. Plenty to improve and a chance to completely reshape the squad for the WC qualifiers. Hopefully a new and successful era for English football will follow.

It would have been a bit of an embarrassment in the Semi's, let's be honest.

yep it on to team GB now and see what they can do. I must give credit to hodgson though, he has only been in charge for 44 days so credit to him for getting to the penalty stage that if he had a bit of lady luck may have got to the semi's....

Thing is we won't though, we are incapable of doing what the Germans have done for example. I just give up with England really I do...

Anyone think England will struggle in the WC Quals? I think it'll be safe but we'll see some 3-2's and 1-0's similar to the group stages last week...

Fact is, England are incapable of beating any real team with actual pedigree in the knockout stages of a major competition.

The fact is that football is more evenly spread at top level.
England looked tonight how they have looked throughout the competition- mediocre and at times inept.
Past Italian strikers would have won this game well before 90 minutes.
Forget Rooney's goal in the last game- he was awful in both matches. Carroll scored a good header in the Group but he's way below international class.
Pirlot made Gerrard look third rate. Defensively we defended for our lives but we had zilch creativity in midfield.
We had the luck to qualify. Full stop.
Yes, any of these teams may beat any other "on the night" but England are second division internationally and to rant on about England's "team spirit" smacks of a bankrupt idealism.
A last comment about the tournament overall.. Players may be fitter, faster, and technically good , but the standard of shooting/finishing is the worst I have ever seen in a top tournament.

We can win the game by having less possession but we let them have far too much and that has cost us.
