Why do we seem to have sacred cows in English football? Rooney is one: the "talismanic" Wayne Rooney. "He must play", it is said. I really don't see why and tonight was a case in point. He was crap. No stamina, couldn't chase the ball and his legs weren't there. And yet still he plays? No wonder the Germans wanted us to win. Frankly, they'd have us for breakfast on that form and no doubt our talisman would be served up on toast with the bratwurst...
I'd hoped the ban would make Rooney come back refreshed and looking to prove a point. Instead he looked rusty and off the pace.
Personally think we play more as a team when Rooney isnt playing More players get hold of the ball and create whereas when he plays, the ball is played to him and the players just expect something wondrous to happen Dont get me wrong, fantastic at club level, just not internationally
We went out of the Euro Champs - but no-one expected us to get past the group - so surely there were positives Rooney, Milner, Young and Parker (IMO) were all ****e - parler couldn't pass a ball to my fat ex wife in a narrow corridor unless she was stood behind him and he had to pass backwards! Gerrard looked great for the first 3 games but completely ran out of steam against the Italians - Rooney miles off the pace - looked like a player with no match practice (Should;ve stayed home with hindsight) Positives - Hart, Lescott, Oxlade Chamberlain (to some extent) and Andy Carroll (definitely looksed our best striker yesterday) and not many more - Glimpses from Welbeck - Walcott's "World class strike" was straight down the middle of the goal and hit Seb Larsoon on the way in - the keeper should have had it easily - I wasn't that impressed with him - seemed to have no willingness to run at players. Maybe the manager has told them to play the defensive game on the wings which hindered Young and Milner but come on - when they got into decent positions their delivery was ****e As for the OP - I can't work out what the cows are scared of
