Pretty much agree. Don't care whether there's animosity between fans, but to see this musical imperialism being flaunted as 'national pride' is just sad.

sorry warky, i agree with truth seeker. apart from being the most underwhelming and dreary tune imaginable, i find our national anthem creepy to the extent that i will walk out of the room when its played. quite why there is always this clamour for it to be sung, and that somehow 'singing it' represents passion for your nation is total bollocks. its an embarrassment - people should shudder when its played, not take glory in it. its total crap and doesn't represent our nation well at all. it should be replaced by something more inspiring like jerusalem.

I had that as a hymn at my wedding. Very inspiring indeed. My want to think about changing it if we get Israel in the WC qualifiers though.

Yes, but is it politic to point that out?

I see your point redruth but I was looking more at Tysldely's bad manners in interrupting the Ukranian national anthem. Not whether or not it's a good idea. But I understand how one can develop on to the other.

I'm not allowed to say. I had Russian grandfather! They used to take your tonsils out through your back passage in those days.

    Too right.

I think Jerusalem, as well as being a far better piece of music, written by the great William Blake with so much more than the modicum of intelligence that comprises 'God Save The Queen', just encapsulates so much more what i tend to love about our country. That kind of feeling of affection i feel for the subtle beauty of this land when i spend an extended period of time away from home, instead of simply feeling like an utter drone.

I so wish Jerusalem overtook that garbage as the presiding national anthem. I'd almost feel proud for once.

National anthems are a political issue. Don't start a thread on them if you don't want them discussing in full.

Anyway, I'll indulge you. What's so sacred about a national anthem that it can't be interrupted by a commentator? A song that we've all seen multiple times before with stilted lyrics about how great the motherland of Ukraine is. Doesn't seem that sacrosanct to me. I'd rather they discussed the upcoming game in the studio a bit more, showed some highlights or something interesting, or you know, let the atmosphere build among the fans instead of making them sing that haughty bilge.

By all means show a clip of them if they're all loud and scarf-twirling and stuff like the Poles were for their last group game. Now that was a scene worth seeing, and I'd add to that the Irish fans singing 'Fields of Athenry', not the same old tired orchestrated anthemic claptrap.

The thread was aimed at the interruption as it is generally considered polite to be quiet during them. There is no need to bring politics into it. It may be a surprise to you but that is possible!

And I'm contesting that 'general politeness' - is it really necessary for the reasons I outlined above?

Agree with every point Jerel has made here.

Makes me sick that we as a country claim to be one of the best countries in the world for freedom of speech, independance and individuality yet we get scorned if we don't sing a ditty designed to massage an unelected monarch's ego. Jerusalem is a hundred times better.

In regards to cutting into someone's national anthem, it's just a song, what's so sacred that everybody should stop for it?

Its about respect, something which is clearly lacking reading some of these posts, I'm not a royalist but its about showing national pride more than anything to do with the Lizzie as far as i'm concerned. The ITV commentor obviously made a complete cock-up.
