    Holmes
    Paine
    Le Tissier

subs Tom Finney (honest, he played once during the war)

A bit of an attacking team. Holmes would have to be at his best!

I can only go on the players I've seen but the teams of the early 80s take some beating. I'll use a modern diamond formation with a defensive and attacking centre midfield and two wide.

    Goalkeeper - Peter Shilton

    Right-back - Ivan Golac
    Left-back - Mark Dennis

    Centre-half - Michael Svensson
    Centre-half - Chris Nicholl

    Defensive mid - Jimmy Case
Attacking mid - Matt Le Tissier
    Right mid - Rod Wallace
    Left mid - David Armstrong

    Striker - Mike Channon
    Striker - Kevin Keegan

    Subs
    Anti Niemi
    Gareth Bale
    Alan Shearer
    Dave Watson
    Morgan Schneiderlin
    Steve Williams
    Steve Moran

On TSW we solved the problem of a best ever team by coming up with a best team for them to play. Therefore, we had an A team and a B team, and several positions to fill. After extensive weekly voting this is what came out of it:

    A-Team

    Manager: Lawrie McMenemy

    GK: Peter Shilton

    RB: Ivan Golac
    CB: Mark Wright
    CB: Michael Svensson
    LB: Wayne Bridge

    RM: Terry Paine
    CM: Alan Ball (C)
    CM: Matthew Le Tissier
    LM: David Armstrong

    RF: Mick Channon
    LF: Ron Davies

    Subs
    GK: Tim Flowers
    DF: Ken Monkou
    MF: Rod Wallace
    ST: Steve Moran
    UP: Nick Holmes

    B-Team

    Manager: Ted Bates

    GK: Antti Niemi

    RB: Jason Dodd
    CB: Claus Lundekvam
    CB: Dave Watson
    LB: Mark Dennis

    RM: Danny Wallace
    CM: Steve Williams
    CM: Jimmy Case (C)
    LM: Chris Marsden

    RF: Kevin Keegan
    LF: Marian Pahars

    Subs
    GK: Kelvin Davis
    DF: Mick Mills
    MF: Ronnie Ekelund
    ST: Alan Shearer
    UP: Peter Osgood

Bear in mind that this was a fans vote. Although it was made plain that votes were not be to be based on whether a particular player was a fans favourite, or had once done something special, one or two players got the nod ahead of better players, in my opinion. The teams were generally voted for on their quality, and I think the line ups bear that out. Just noticed we had 5 subs. We could put 2 more on each bench now. Note, we also voted on managers.

Good shout. I'd have Williams in for Wallace and Ball would have to go somewhere. Peach for Dennis.

I'll go with a more recent team more or less post Le Tissier.

Perhaps Alan Ball could be in there but this coming season you will see how good Morgan is. I would like to make a change though - Mark Wright should be in there in place of Dave Watson.

What this does show is how lucky we have been over the last thirty odd years! Some truly great players! Let's hope some of our current squal will appear in future lists.

I hope so mate, I really do. But for a list like this, too soon. He's unproven in the top division, which really, should prevent inclusion into a list like this. Like the rest of your picks though.
