Add this to the mix and well....

    Group B

    Germany (v Denmark)
Win - Secures qualification and top spot.
Draw - Secures qualification and top spot.
Lose - Through with a 3-2 defeat, or a higher-scoring one-goal loss. Otherwise, out if Portugal beat Netherlands, but through if the Portuguese do not claim three points.

    Portugal (v Netherlands)
Win - Secures qualification unless Denmark beat Germany 3-2, or by a higher-scoring one-goal margin.
Draw - Secures qualification if Denmark do not beat Germany.
Lose - A one-goal defeat would still see them through if Germany beat Denmark, but any more and they are out.

    Denmark (v Germany)
    Win - Secures qualification.
Draw - Will only be enough if Netherlands beat Portugal.
    Lose - Out.

    Netherlands (v Portugal)
Win - Secures qualification if by more than one goal and Germany beat Denmark.
    Draw - Out.
    Lose - Out.

Its quiet simple really, a team that has lost its 1st 2 games can still get through...<laugh><laugh>

You're wrong there red - Holland are out. Even if they win and Denmark lose they still finish below Denmark because Denmark beat them in the head-to-head. Germany are also definitely though - they finish above Portugal even if Germany lose to Denmark and Portugal beat Holland - Germany and Portugal would both have 6 points but Germany would be above Portugal because they beat them 1-0. Goal difference doesn't count any more in this tournament - it's just points, then the head-to-head. Goal difference only then comes into it if the head-to-head was a draw.

Oddy ive took the last two posts off the BBC web site... As you can see the Dutch, according to them, can still go through...!!!

They have to win and a German win, plus a 2 goal swing...

Ron these are the official rules for sorting out the groups stage/match ups... They may as well have written them in gobble-dee-gook...<laugh>

God it's complicated but I think I get it now:

Imagine Germany beat Denmark 3-0 and Holland beat Portugal 3-0

Germany would be top on 9 points - nothing complicated there

Below that we would have 3 teams on 3 points, each having won 1 match: Denmark beat Holland 1-0, Portugal beat Denmark 3-2 and Holland beat Portugal 3-0. The head-to-head doesn't work here as they've all beaten each other (sort of) so it then goes to goal difference in the matches involving the 3 teams. Holland would have a GD of +1, Denmark a GD of 0 and Portugal a GD of -2 so Holland would go through.

It didn't go to GD in group A as there were only 2 teams tied on points (Greece and Russia) and the head-to-head gave it to Greece. Phew <yikes>

Red, fellow predictors, not too many would have scored points last night I guess. Seeing results like that make me slightly aprehensive about Tuesday evening now.

Wouldn't Holland have a goal diff of +2?

So does that mean that, effectively, you just disregard any matches involving the team(s) not on equal points and produce a table based purely on the remaining matches?

I think so Ron - goal difference in the matches involving only the teams tied on points

The switching to head to head record over goal difference has been present in the European Championship since Euro 2004, so they've been in place for a while now. Ditto in the European Cup group stages. I'm not sure it's the best rule but they haven't just changed it.

As for whoever complained about too many foreign football players in the league - dear oh dear, take your attitudes back to the past where they belong.

I'm guessing it never had a big impact in 2004? I can't remember really, was pissed most of the time. 2008 Didn't happen for me cos England weren't there <ok>

Is it the same in the World Cup? Or is it just a UEFA thing?

Your loss in 2008, was a great tournament!

I don't think they do do it that way in the World Cup, so maybe it's a UEFA thing. All a bit of a head-scratcher.
