The problem with young is that he doesn't last 90mins,he is good going forward but is weak at defending. Playing 4-4-2 with young in it isn't going to work well as he was left isolated and when needed to defend he left a lot to be desired...a formation of 4-2-3-1 would much more suit his style of play and work well with the rest of the team as the wingers wouldn't be left so far away from the side as we saw today with Milner and Young. Should Rooney play?I mean he is a great player and the England team looks better on paper when his name is in it but he hasn't done much for England since 2004,he was shocking in SA in 2010 and looked pretty crap in that friendly against Belgium when he came on.I'd prefer to keep Welbeck up front.
England will be better and always would have been better with Rooney if he plays/played with his brain. He's our most talented player no doubt. If he will follow Hodgson's orders and be disciplined to his role then he should play.
Very enjoyable game and credit to both teams for putting on such terrific entertainment. I am now going to upset many people here but England do miss the class of Lampard as I think he would have given the England midfield so much more authority!!
And Wilshere who is class.I know he got injured last summer but he would of got picked for the euros if he was fit, what a player he is.
Without a doubt. Lampard is a great player Parker was great last season and the first half of this season. But since then he's looked dreadful and off the pace every time I've seen him. He was wasteful with the ball tonight and got forward way too much. We don't need Parker in attack he doesn't ever score goals or set up goals anyway..if he plays he needs to sit deep
Rooney is going to play. Roy has picked him even though he's been suspended for the 1st two games. If he left him out he'd just get grief from the media. Hopefully he brings something to the team.
Great player, hope the injury doesn't affect his development. We have some young players with great potential and, if we train them to play in the right manner, we could be a force in several years time.
Yep I would have used the Euros to give our youngsters tourny experience for the World cup. Shame most of them are injured.
Well there is always deficiencies with England, however it is nice to see people not expecting too much and the team scoring a few good goals, considering Hodgson has had so little time to work with an average squad. As for Welbeck he looks such a talent and will surely lead England's line for many years: strong, quick and technically sound. Walcott did well tonight, especially more centrally rather than hugging the touchline. Where does Rooney fit into all of this?
I agree with you. Goals is a bit of a pointless fact with all the friendlies and qualifiers against weak teams. Contribution to win % is more important (or reducing loss%). I mean Crouch has 22 goals in 42 and has scored against a lot of poor teams. I personally wouldn't play Rooney unless he listens for once.. a player like Milner is someone who must be a managers dream, a true professional even if he is an average at best player. If Rooney had been playing tonight no way would we have come back from 2-1... He'd have thrown a huge tantrum and we'd have lost by 2 or 3 imo
What was noticeable about tonight was an absence of excessive play-acting by either team compared to other international teams!! Pity Sweden have to go home as there are other teams in other groups who really do put on a "top class show" in this department!
The refs are letting things go a bit more in this tournament, but also missing a few blatant things. Hard to get an easy medium.
Yeah he is our most techically gifted midfielder at the moment.I really hope that he overcomes his injuries.
