Think Hammond did well last year and did his role as captain well. I may be old fashioned but I
agree that I personally like a CB for the captain for the old argument he can see all the pitch better as he is looking
forward. Kelvin as Club captain if he is to be no 1 keeper . Think it all depends on who we sign and there experience etc

If he has a very impressive season in the premier league, he will get called up, like Yohann Cabaye. Central midfield is a very competitive area for France though so I wouldn't bet on it.

It doesn't matter if big clubs come in for him, we are very unlikely to sell him, and he's shown no signs of being the type to cause trouble to get a move away. Quite the opposite in fact.

There is no reason why he won't be at least considered for France if he has a good season in the PL with us. However, do you think he's good enough to play in the France senior side...serious question.

Not currently, no. In future? It's possible, but as I said, France are overburdened with other young, gifted central midfielders ready to come into the side as well. I hope it happens because that will mean we have a hell of a player on our hands!

Again not keen on strikers and goalkeepers as on field captains,

Personality and the ability to command the respect of the rest of the team are important, lets face it being able to bawl out a fellow team mate in full view of a capacity crowd and have the respect to get away with it with only positive outcomes is no mean acheivement, Goal keepers and strikers can be disconnected from the opposite end of their team for significant periods so this communication gets hampered.

Also the ability to lead by example is also vital, and midfielders are ideally placed to raise the game by active involvement as opportunities to do so are frequent, again keepers and Strikers tend to have to wait for their moments, midfielders especially can create them..

So midfielders with the necessary authority, respect drive and nouse are the ideal candidates.

As for Hammond, I reckon he will lift his game yet again, he will never be the most skilled midfielder, but box to box he puts in the graft and does the dirty work, those who play around such players appreciate them. Provided he does justify his berth in the staring 11 keep him captain. But dont put hiom in the 11 just because he's captain, if that happens it's time for a new captain.

The real disadvantage of a goalkeeper captain is that he's unable to approach the referee without leaving the goal unattended. The licence to converse with the referee is the biggest advantage the captain has, so perhaps the most important characteristics are a cool head, diplomacy and persuasiveness!

I would happily consider Cork to be our next captain.

Agree about goalkeepers. I'm very anti-goakeepers being captains. But in certain circumstances, I'm quite happy for a striker to be captain.

Take Lambert for example, who I've already said I'd like to see be made captain. He's hardly the sort of striker who'll detatch himself from the rest of the team by hanging around the penalty box. You regularly see Lambert back at the half-way line, very much involved in our build-up play.

How good is it that we have named half our side as possible captains. Personally I would also go for Jos. Love players who wear their heart on their sleeve!

I think that has been a strength of Southampton recently. You want players who take responsibility. SKD is club captain, Hammond as on field captain, Fonte as vice captain. Richardson was captain of Leeds, Butterfield was at Palace etc

Jos & Morgan have warn the armband in cup games
