See Steve Bruce has given him the push from Hull. Doesn't seem to stay at any club for very long. Is he just unlucky or more likely not very good?
Everyone in the game who mentions him always says what a good coach he is (with a straight face, I think), if that's the case then maybe he'd be open to a move back to the south coast?
That's when he was a caretaker after Strachan left. Later he was made full-time manager and oversaw 14 matches. The only one he won was against Portsmouth!
You've obviously blotted out the memory as a safety measure. Worst thing, amongst many bad things, Lowe did. Unbelievable appointment. I can actually feel the anger well up at the thought of Lowe's utterly misplaced faith and cheapness, and Wigley's complete inability to do the job. I was never angry with Steve, just annoyed that he didn't refuse the offer. But I was incandescent with Lowe. You don't **** with a Premier League club's status by saving money and employing a student. That was the beginning of the end for me. Lookng back, the situation eventually got rid of Lowe and we ended up with Markus and Nicola. So something positive accidentally came out of it. My goodness, how lucky we were.
That's very harsh and to be frank alittle ignorant of his abilities as a coach. He is very well respected as a coach and the OP talked about him as coach not a manager. There is a never ending list of good coaches who couldn't manage.
To be fair SS I think you might also have a bit of a selective memory on this one. My recollection is that Lowe wanted to bring back Hoddle, which would certainly not have been acheap appontment, but the fans made it absolutely clear that they did not want this. I remember the abuse Lowe and Hoddle got away to Aresnal, for example (and the gooners joining in!). I sometimes wonder if Lowe gave Wigley the job to spite us all. I've always been of the view that had we reappointed Hoddle, as unpopular as that might have been, we would not have been relegated.
I had no problem with Hoddle returning. I also do not have a selective memory on this one. If, as you think, Lowe appointed Wigley [after sacking Sturrock] to spite the anti-Hoddle brigade, then he certainly didn't make it clear, and he certainly shouldn't have been playing with the financial survival of the football club. However you look at it, Lowe was a fool to do what he did, and he ensured his own demise in the long run.
I've not advocated him coming back, but if I read tomorrow that NA has appointed him then I'd be for it. Think he's happy with Andy and Deano though.
I agree that whatever way you look it Wigley was a foolish appointment, especially following on from the sacking of Sturrock, an appointment that was also a risk in terms of a lack of experience managing at the highest level. But I don't thgink this was a case of Lowe trying to get a manager in on the cheap, I don't think that's how it was. Hoddle was the stand out candidate and looked all set for a return - it was the reaction of the fans that stopped it happening. The comment about Lowe appointing Wigley to spite us was kind of tounge-in-cheek but you never know I suppose.
Fair enough Know what you mean, and zero credit to Lowe for making history turn out the way it did, but really Fran..? We'd possibly still be a mid-table, mediocre Premiership club, going nowhere and being at extreme risk of relegation every season, with Lowe, Askham et al, in charge. I'll take the way things accidentally turned out, every time.
