It used to be said that rugby was played by thugs and watched by gentlemen, whereas soccer was played by gentlemen and watched by thugs.

Cricket is a game that can only be played in full sun and was selected as the national game by a country that rarely has a dry summer.

Seriously though, I've watched both sports and American Football is, IMO, much better and I think Rugby is an awful sport.

I like both Rugby Union and American Football - prefer Rugby Union over the two. Both can be complicated to understand initially, but once you have the knowledge; they are both enjoyable to watch. What I will say about rugby; the sport does not tolerate cheats, fakers or divers - unilke football where such actions invariably go unpunished.

Seeing as the games aren't similar in any way other than the shape of the ball, this is an interesting comment.

Well, looks like I'm "rediculous", good thing I'm not "ridiculous" though.

All criticisms of American Football are things I used to think before I actually got into the sport, which makes me realise just how ignorant most people are about it. I was once, until I actually decided to educate myself. Now American Football is comfortably my #2 sport and one I follow passionately. Of course, sadly most people in England are still idiots who think it's a rugby rip off. I'm happy, at least, that PompeyLapras knows what he's talking about in here.

Bit dodgy talking about no cheating in rugby when 'bloodgate' is still in living memory. In football, they spill real blood, slap on an elastoplast and get on with it.

Watching american football is as interesting as watching chess*; that's why they need all the cheerleaders, bands and other guff - to actually make it intresting. Rugby OTOH is far more like football and flows more, it's visually much more entertaining to watch & anyone who says that there's no tactics involved in rugby doesn't understand the game.

*I say this as someone likes playing chess

I've watched a lot of American Football and they never, ever show bands/cheerleaders over the actual game - in fact they very rarely show them at all, except in pre-game entertainment, but by that logic getting people like Katherine Jenkins to sing the national anthem is "other guff" to distract from the game. Not entirely sure how much you actually know about watching American Football.

Dan just because I haven't got into the sport doesn't mean I'm ignorant about it. I've seen a few college games in the states. I just think watching rugby is far better. Just because you like it and I don't doesn't make me ignorant. It's a matter of opinion. For me to start making comments on players and teams would make me ignorant

Yeah when I saw the Superbowl (not all of it unfortunately) I can't remember seeing much footage of cheerleaders or anything.

I think I saw more footage of cheerleaders during the IPL coverage (which can hardly be considered uninteresting). I think it's a myth that rugby is a flowing game. It might flow a bit more than American Football, but most of the time it's hardly flowing in general.

You didn't actually make an ignorant statement - just one of opinion - so are one of the few people the ignorance comment doesn't apply to. I disagree with your opinion but it isn't ignorant - however most other post on the subject in here are. Sorry for the confusion.
