To be fair he does make one very salient point. Players are now using the excuse of CL football being needed as a reason to secure moves elsewhere and increase the size of their wallet. "I must play CL" basically equates to "I can make an extra 10 grand a week there"

 

Spot on. Although you know for a fact the cockney crook would have been using CL football as a lure for potential signings.

 

I don't watch the Champions League anymore until it gets to the knockout stages. I'm a traditionalist; I still think the European Cup should be contested between the Champions of their respective nations rather than champions plus teams who finish 3rd or 4th in their respective leagues. The group format is a joke and was simply a justification for the big clubs to monopolise the competition and generate more revenue for themselves.

The greed of the clubs has created the modern mercenary footballer so it's no surprise when [the players] use the excuse that they want to play in the Champions League. Eden Hazard is a perfect example. Fair play he's a talented player and could possibly have a bg future, but come on he's how old..21? He's won a couple of titles in France and is being paid £170,000 per week supposedly. He argues that he chose Chelsea because of Champions League football. Hazard chose Chelsea becuase they'd won the CL, not because they were in it.
