I find it really annoying that Hodgson was forced to pick only for on Rio or Terry for the England squad because Terry racially abused Rio's brother, and as a result Rio is out of the squad! It's not fair that he should have to miss out because of what Terry did.

So in a way Terry making abusive comments got him an England call up! What a world we live in! And England is apparently the country to look up to when it comes to acceptance! What example is it setting when fantastic, solid players miss out and abusive, immature ****s get to play?

Terry is a better all round player than Ferdinand, he offers more to the attack, but what's the point of having all this talent if you only turn up in half your matches?

Terry is solid as **** when at his best, but he's inconsistent now and makes too many mistakes.

Ferdinand is a solid, reliable, quality CB, and much more consistent than Terry these days, he'd be my pick for England any day. He's also a lot more mature and doesn't get himself into trouble like Terry does.

And on top of all this, players are getting injured and Rio STILL isn't getting a call up, and neither is Richards!!

Richards has some developing to do, but he's definitely the best attacking RB we have, and his defensive performances have been little short of solid whenever I've seen him. Plus he can be used as a CB if needed.

It's a real disgrace that neither of these players are getting call ups.

I wouldn't have picked Terry or Ferdinand - regardless of what's gone on. I think Hodgson has missed a trick by not bringing in new blood and having a good clear out of the old guard who have consistently let us down.
There's a lot of good new players out there and I always felt that England were at their most exiting under the old regime when the new young guys were given a chance.
We are not expected to do much in this competition anyway - why not change things ?

Apart from bad publicity on and off the field, Terry isn't the player of old and it's time we moved on and brought a younger player in.

Richards is not getting a call up because he refused to be on the stanby list!

He didn't get called up for the original squad because Hodgson only took two right backs. Johnson was brought because he's got international experience and has played a lot of games with the rest of the back four (Terry, A.Cole, Lescott etc) and Phil Jones was brought in because he offers greater versatility.

The main reason Richards is not there now instead of Kelly is because he threw his toys out of the pram when he wasn't initially selected.

Correct. I totally sympathise with Rio, because surely if you can only pick one side of the racism wall you choose the player who isn't going to court next month, though I personally would've dropped both and just gone Lescott and Jagielka.

As far as Carrick and Richards are concerned they should be ashamed of themselves. I'd strike both off from now on (Carricks probably too old anyway for future tournaments, but Richards has shot himself in the foot). Roys picked the best team available, which through no fault of his own isn't as good as it could be.

Where was this publicized that Richards didn't want to go on the stand by list? Missed that if it is the case and would in turn have no symapthy for the lad, but the Rio situation is a joke, if Terry is there so should Rio, over Kelly (not complaining about any other selection).

To be fair, I wouldn't have picked Rio either, he's just not good enough anymore and there's better players who start ahead of him. Although in the current 'injury crisis' I can't see the reasons he hasn't at least been called into the 23, other than the 'Black ****-gate' and the fact that Terry is slightly better than Rio.

The strange decison is Richards, 1 of the top 3 RB's in the league this year and funnily enough none of the others have been selected either, Walker(inj), Richards and Simpson.

I have read, on twitter, that Richards was asked to be on the 1st stand-by list but refused and this is why he's being overlooked.

Rio is not considered fit enough to play consecutive games in a week. I believe SAF also holds this belief. That's him out and its questionable whether you pick him anyway based on form. Many Man U fans feelings on him this season reveal plenty. He did end the season well I thought. Hasn't been involved with England for a while so no real surprise.

Richards does not deserve to be involved and the original decision not to pick him looks correct if this refusal to go on stand by is true. Absolutely ridiculous decision if true and clearly very poorly advised. If this has come from his father then he is an idiot quite frankly. Whether its disappointment or a hissy fit you don't make that kind of decision. You know when you do you are basically turning your back on your country for good. He's a man not a boy and needs to grow up. Personally I still see plenty of problems in his game and can see why Mancini preferred Zabeleta. These were exposed again when Pearce gave him a chance to stake a claim against Holland. He cost us a goal through his over exuberance and lack of thought.

I don't agree with all of Hodgsons picks but I can see the thought process behind the ones I don't agree with. Kelly and Henderson are two of the top performers for the 21's. You either go that way or to complete unknowns. Everyone just needs to calm down and accept he's picked up a ****ed up situation due to our bungling FA which is now getting worse as the demands of our league now take hold. Add in the usual slice of luck with Cahill too.

The two you pick Tash, its pretty clear why they're not in and its 100% correct.

Rio issue aside, why pick Kelly. Unless looking like a rabbit in the headlights was the criteria for Roy picking Cahills replacement there are numerous better choices than Kelly, and indeed Henderson. Hopefully we don't get any injuries, it's bad enough Johnson may start against France but to have two players as mediocre as henderson and Kelly playing major international tournament football highlights the flippant nature of hodgsons choice to select them.

The more worrying thing is who else is there? They would need to be fit enough to play two games a week if need be (King and Ferdinand out), preferably been involved at some level for England or known to the manager/coaches and actually wants to be there (Richards/Carrick/Scholes out). We're getting into the depths of our resources now. Aside from the injured guys like Dawson, Saylor, Smalling at centre back I'm struggling.

Spot on. The thing with Richards is his game is all about outmuscling direct wingers. You could see someone like David Silva, Iniesta or Mata giving him a torrid time. His positioning is not great and he has a poor concentration span.

People have to start questioning Richards instead of the England managers now, because this is the second manager he's been overlooked by in the England side, and he was dropped towards the end of the season for Zabaleta, as you said. I don't understand why people slate Johnson either, he is still being tagged with this label of being poor defensively purely because of a spell at Chelsea when he was very young and wasn't great defensively at the time. How many attacking full backs are good at a young age defensively? Walker certainly isn't, Maicon was still in Brazil, Dani Alves was still establishing himself as a winger at Sevilla.

Attacking full backs mature at an older age than other positions, much like goalkeepers, so Johnson for some reason is getting judged on his level 8 years ago rather than the level he's at now. Richards might be ready for the next world cup if he shows a desire to get his head down and improve further like Johnson did when he left Chelsea and went to Portsmouth.

Johnson was one of few to perform for Liverpool consistently last season. Also done very well and regularly involved with England and known to the coaches. I think Walker is ahead of him now but he is a very good option, particularly going forward. You can see the thinking picking him ahead of Richards. I'm not sure Richards is better defensively and is not as good going forward. With Jones providing a defensive option there, it makes sense. We'd all like to pick 25 players but unfortunately you have to make some tough decisions. Full back is always an area likely to suffer because its impact on deciding a game is less.

I have little worry on Kelly either. Looked very good whenever I've seen him. Certainly for 21's and looked a goal threat too. He is likely to be in the hunt come 2014 so you can see the thinking once you get past the unfit/injured/unwilling.

Agreed. As I said on this thread, Richards is not going because he isn't as good as Johnson as a right back and he doesn't offer the versatility of Jones and Johnson either. Johnson can play left back or right back and Jones can play right back, centre back and centre mid. Richards can only play right back and at a push centre back. You can't afford to have such limited players (position wise) as back up when the squad is so small in my opinion. Can you afford to have players who throw the toys out of the pram when something doesn't go their way aswell? What if Richards disrupted the team harmony if he isn't selected for a certain game in the tournament? Maybe England are better off without him until he grows up a bit as a footballer and a person anyway.

Kelly is solid and reliable defensively and will not kick up a fuss if he doesn't get a minute of action in the euros. He's exactly the type of squad player you need in my opinion. Quiet and no fuss, plus it'll be valuable experience for him and you'd expect him to be higher up the pecking order by the time the world cup and the next euros come around. It won't harm anyone for him to get a feel of international tournament football.
