There is a TV series called "Footballing Rivalries" which gets shown here from time to time. Have you guys seen it at all? They have included: Moan Utd v City Rangers v Celtic Liverpoo v Everton Arsenal v Spurs Real Madrid v Barcelona Germany v Netherlands Brazil v Argentina England v Scotland England v Germany Ajax v PSV (I think) Quite well done, actually with good game footage and interviews.
Leeds18 you know they are well behaved they all sit in a line playing instruments when they score, their firm is called Norwich Citys Brass Band goal music ****ers
You give off the impression that you wish you were supporting Leeds in the 80's and 90's - in fact I'd go as far to say you wish you were still living in the 80's and 90's. I might be wrong, but that is certainly the impression you give.
To be fair mate, in a previous round we took 8k to Forest and had absolutely no trouble. In fact, we stood there laughing at their fans being nicked one by one. Quite funny when they keep telling us they 'don't care'
Good if you're involved with the stupid and tedious politico-social niggling. In terms of an actual footballing rivalry, I'd say it's about equivalent to Sparta Prague vs Slavia.[/QUOTE] I presume you haven't been to one of these games lately, as sectarian or racist chants are not tolerated and as for stupid niggling, that is a common thing at all footie matches. In recent years, Elland Roads atmosphere is at best poor. Onlt two grounds I can comment on as they are the only two I frequent
You are wrong. I'd rather be supporting Leeds United in 2012, but in an environment where supporters can be supporters like they are so generously permitted to be in almost every other country in the world where civil liberties are valued and proper passion is even encouraged! I know, right?! I'm not saying it's as political as it used to be at the games, but it's still the implication of the rivalry, and the reason it's so strongly felt. You say in recent years our atmosphere's been poor, and that's true, but not much worse than anywhere else for your average league game. Watch Celtic or Rangers playing the standard of opposition we play and their grounds will hardly be rocking either. And for a like-for-like comparison, take our game against scum this season which I thought was a very good atmosphere for our recent standards, or even the cup games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs. And those were generated just for footballing reasons!
You're suggesting the atmosphere against scum is purely footballing. I think not and suggest most of the same animosity felt between the sets of fans is the same as what is felt between Celtic and Rangers
Celtic wave Irish flags and Rangers wave British ones. Leeds hold up Leeds scarves and scum hold up scum ones. Spot the difference. There's the obvious Yorkshire vs Lancashire undertones of the rivalry, but that's A) far less peddled than the Old Firm stuff, B) not even a real political issue, and C) takes a backstage to the rivalry between the cities and the football clubs.
Celtics roots are intrinsically Irish, originally formed to help feed Irish immigrants to Glasgow. Provided many families for years with a guaranteed meal daily. No surprise the Irish connection has carried on to this day. Whats the story with reminders of the Munich disaster or scum fans waving Turkish lags. What has any of that got to do with football
The fact that it happened to people involved with the actual football club, whereas the death-taunts coming from Old Firm clubs are invariably about famine and soldiers who had either been born and died before either football club were founded, or who had no connection with either of them anyway in the vast majority of cases.
Thanks babe. You can't possibly understand how little I have going on right now, it's brilliant. Sat here watching the royal flotilla and having a cheeky vino in anticipation of a relaxing eve. I'm sure you're having a ****ing rave of a time from behind your keyboard seeing as you're also living such a thrilling life as to be wasting it spent on a football forum, eh?
I'll give you that one. Although in my defence I am partaking in a few beverages in the historic town of Beverley this evening. Enjoy your wine and have a pleasant night. Your mate, NFU.
I'm in France this weekend to get away from all the jubilee **** and I still find myself reading the threads on here. How ****ing sad is that
