ive just got the first 4 episodes and plan on a smoke and some viewing, any of ye degenerates watch the show and is it any good ? please log in to view this image
I started watching, Hash, but gave up (after four episodes, in fact). I can see that it’s artfully filmed and that a great deal of care has been taken on the (period) details, but the thing just moved too slowly for my liking. Plus, there’s a Scottish female actress with an absolutely horrifying Irish accent. Honestly, it made it near unwatchable for me. (I think she was in Trainspotting, although I forget her name.) Still, I don’t want to ruin it for you. Smoke heavily and I’m sure you'll find the speed of the thing about right. Maybe even a bit pacy.
Kelly McDonald? I learnt something the other day. When Americans make movies, TV programmes etc. that require people talking with the likes of Irish, Scottish or English accents they are taught to speak the way that Americans EXPECT those accents to sound. Hence, the accents often sound exaggerated to us.
Kelly McDonald, that's it, thanks. She was maybe the schoolgirl in Trainspotting? If that's true, incidentally - the thing about actors being told to speak accents in the way that Americans would expect to hear them - it explains a lot. I wonder if British actors speaking with American accents sound so terrible to Americans? For example, I watched The Wire and never knew that a couple of the main actors were English. (McNulty and Stringer Bell, I think). I was perfectly convinced by their accents, but maybe Americans were chewing their hands in despair?
Boardwalk Empire is superb don't listen to the haters! p.s Kelly McDonald would get her backdoor smashed in ****e accent or not
I have seen all of BE months ago, I personally thought it was brilliant. It's a slow burner but well worth sitting through a few slow episodes at the start while the story arcs develop. If you liked Deadwood you should love BE. Not loads of action but plenty of good dialogue and an authentic 30s feel.
Dominic West (McNulty) was praised highly by Philly residents and actors for his authentic Philly accent. Apparently it was 100% accurate.
Ah well, I may go back to Boardwalk Empire and give it more time. I certainly like what I’ve seen of Deadwood so far – series 1 and 2 - although the actress who plays Calamity Jane caused me problems. Her drunkness/alcoholism seemed overstated and clumsy, a bit like someone might do it in a school play. I don’t know, it just made me wince. (Apparently she’s a very good actress, though – source: my wife.) I’m impressed by your news that McNulty got his accent bang on, DevAdvocate. It can’t be easy to convince the locals – any locals - of one’s authenticity. I’m always reluctant to replace The West Wing with The Wire at the top of my gratuitously pointless list of favourite (American) TV shows, but this heartwarming news may tip me over the edge. Joint top, maybe. 1. The Wire/The West Wing 2. The Sopranos 3. Six Feet Under Looks about right.
Dominic West. He's very very posh and a very very talented actor! Eaton educated and has a very colourful CV. One job was a trapeze artist in the avant-garde Argentinean circus De La Guarda. As for Kelly McDonald, she's a friends wife so I won't have a bad word said about her
Great show! Bit of a slow burner but after a few episodes things start to move along, and there's even some nudey ladies from time to time too!
verdict : i like it it was a bit slow and the accent was **** but i got over that to thouroughly enjoy it
