Press Release from Goodwood: BLACK CAVIAR SIDESTEPS GOODWOODâS TOP RACE Black Caviar, the great unbeaten Australian sprinter, will not be among the entries for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes when the Group One mile race closes at noon tomorrow (Tuesday, May 29). This is despite QIPCO increasing the prize money of Goodwoodâs top race from £300,000 to an amazing £1 million if both Black Caviar and Frankel, the worldâs two highest-rated horses and unbeaten in 31 outings between them, met in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes on the second day of Glorious Goodwood, Wednesday, August 1. Black Caviar, trained by Peter Moody in Australia, is due to come to Britain in early June and run at Royal Ascot (June 19 to 23). Moody Racingâs Jeff OâConnor explained: âMoody Racing does not intend running Black Caviar at a mile in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, Frankel or no Frankel, as we are looking at getting her back to Melbourne for racing later in the year if she comes through Ascot as well as she can. âTherefore, we are not planning to nominate her for the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at tomorrowâs nomination stage as we feel it would not be the right thing by the racing industry worldwide, giving false hope that the race may happen. âWe understand it would have been a great selling point for Glorious Goodwood and we appreciate the more than generous offer from QIPCO in getting the conditions of the race to where they are but we will have to decline on this occasion.â Black Caviarâs British campaign needs to finish by mid-July, taking quarantine into account, if she is to return home in time to be prepared for the Spring Carnival in Melbourne. Goodwood will announce the entries for QIPCO Sussex Stakes, won last year in tremendous style by Frankel, at noon on Wednesday, May 30. The QIPCO Sussex Stakes is one of the 35 races which make up the 2012 QIPCO British Champions Series. Adam Waterworth, managing director of Goodwood Racecourse, commented: âWe are obviously disappointed that Black Caviar will not be entered in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes but fully understand her connectionsâ viewpoint. âIt was always going to be a long shot to have worldâs top two horses race against each other because of their different distance requirements but we wanted to make sure we did everything we could to facilitate such a contest. âTherefore, we are very grateful to QIPCO for increasing the prize money so much if Black Caviar and Frankel had met. âThe QIPCO Sussex Stakes, of course, remains a very significant Group One contest and we look forward to this yearâs renewal, which may feature Frankel for a second year in succession. He would meet the current crop of three-year-old milers for the first time in the race.â Rod Street, chief executive officer of the British Champions Series and Racing for Change, pointed out that Britain is lucky to have Black Caviar racing here. He said: âWe cannot underestimate the efforts it took to entice Black Caviarâs connections to travel across the globe to race in the UK in the first place. We should celebrate the fact that she is coming and adding another dimension to what could be the most memorable of Flat seasons. âItâs natural that racing fans wanted to see a clash between Black Caviar and Frankel and it had all the makings of something very special. Nonetheless, it was always going to be difficult to find the right conditions for a sprinter to meet a miler, who has learned to settle and is likely to step up to beyond a mile. âFrom a RfC point of view, our glass is much more than half full. The two best horses in the world, unbeaten in 31 races between them, will be racing in the UK this summer over the distances at which they excel. Come and see them!â Black Caviar, a six-year-old mare trained by Peter Moody in Australia, owned by Gary & Kerryn Wilkie, Werrett Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Colin & Jannene Madden, Pam Hawkes, David & Jill Taylor and mostly partnered by Luke Nolen, has been successful on all her 21 starts from five to seven furlongs. Frankel, a four-year-old colt trained by Sir Henry Cecil in Newmarket, owned by Khalid Abdulla and ridden by Tom Queally, has won 10 from 10 over seven furlongs and a mile. Glorious Goodwood happens at the worldâs most beautiful racecourse over five days, from Tuesday, July 31 through to Saturday, August 4, 2012 Not a surprise in my opinion. A match race will not take place, as the Dowager Duchess of Bedford said in the Racing Post over the weekend, the most likely meeting for the two will be in the covering shed!
Just beat me to it Princess - Such a shame. i was talking about it this morning to a mate of mine & I was getting so excited at the prospect of it happening. I will and always coincide with Frankel! but what a race it would have been! But who ever lost would devalue their potential future earning price (away from racing) imo!
I gather them meeting in the covering shed isn't likely either. Apparently one of her owners is a breeding lines fanatic and Frankel's spectacular pedigree doesn't mix well with Black Caviar's.
Be fair if I had a mare with the talent of Black Caviar I'd take her to a proven sire. Frankel may be a great race horse but he hasnt proven himself as a sire. Even if Frankels pedigree is good, it doesn't mean he will be a great sire. Plenty of great horse's have flopped in the breeding shed, most notably the great Brigadier Gerard, who for my money along with Dubai Millenium would be the only miler who could have competed with Frankel
I don't think the fact he is unproven is the issue. They have sent Black Caviar's dam to established poor sires! I think one of the owners is very up on his lines, and has obviously had success with it too. I thought the plan was Diamond Jubilee and then July Cup but I'm not sure whether that has changed. It sounds a bit like she's going straight back to Aus after Ascot but could be 'lost in translation' as it were.
Essentially means that Frankel will have to step up in trip sooner rather than later if he is to stamp his mark on the season. I can't think of a miler on the planet who would trouble him. Bit of a shame his career didn't overlap with Goldikova in her prime.
The plan is to run Black Caviar in the July Cup, if she comes out of Ascot well. She will then head straight to quarantine before flying back to Australia.
Is this the same Goldikova who lost to Zarkava, Makfi, Canford Cliffs and Immortal Verse over a mile? Her only claim to fame is beating a load of 2nd rate milers in the states. Whilst she was very tough and consistent, we see milers who can run to her level year in year out. Frankel would have delt with her very easily
I never actually thought they would meet to be honest, it would have been a lot more hope than expectation! Just have to settle for watching her demolish our bunch of distinctly average sprinters! As for Goldikova, she wouldn't have been with 5 lengths of Frankel with her weight allowance and in her prime! Shows how good he is really I suppose.
