Sunderland remain amongst the most prolific travellers in the Premier League and will clock up almost 8,500 miles next season. If travelling to every away league fixture by road along the most popular route from the Stadium of Light, the club's supporters will travel 8,375 miles to watch their team - an average round trip of 440 miles for each of the 19 games. That's equivalent of a round trip from London to New Delhi, India, as the crow flies - or a third of the circumference of the Earth! The total mileage is 849 miles more than last year's total of 7,526, which was itself an increase from the tally of 7,012 in 2010-11. The three relegated teams (Wolves, Bolton and Blackburn) subtract a total of 943 miles, with the latter two amongst Sunderland's shortest trips last season. However, the three newly-promoted clubs (Reading, Southampton and West Ham) add an imposing 1,792 miles to the tally - an average round-trip of 597 miles. As was the case last season, the round-trip to Swansea remains the longest of the campaign at 697 miles. The long haul to the Liberty Stadium is followed by the games at Southampton (637 miles) and Reading (603 miles). Next season's shortest round trip is of course Newcastle (25.2 miles), followed by Manchester City (276 miles). For a further comparison, driving from Sunderland to Suwon to watch the Black Cats in the Peace Cup tournament would mean a journey of 7,168 miles, taking in a total of 12 countries along the way! http://www.safc.com/news/20120528/fans-to-go-the-extra-mile_2256213_2790256 Thats more miles than most fans will have insurre their cars for, very interesting.
There can only be the barcodes that travel further seeing as they are 10 miles further up the road? Lets hope they have many more rewards for that incredible mileage next year as well?
I remember doing 1350 miles in 8 days following NUFC. QPR, Villa and Forest. I haven't missed an away game in 5 years, dread to think how many miles I've done.
