I have to comment on one thing which really stood out in this game:

English players CANNOT seem to pass the ball. How are young English lads trained to play these days? Ok, we're 1-0 up as we speak, but Norway always look a hell of a lot more self assured when they're on the ball.

    Why is this??

If this is how we play against Norway, god knows what the end result is going to be against the likes of France or a slightly better team..they'll murder us in midfield.

I don't think we've strung more than 4 passes together in the entire second half - and technically we appear inferior. It's a sad fact that we produce a Gazza or a Scholes once a generation, whereas Spain / Germany / Italy ...even Switzerland, who in my humble opinion have some cracking players, seem to have a full team of them...

A lot of improvement but. Statistics say that posters moaning mindlessly about how crap we are have dropped by 8%. Only 2% have been whining about Downing in the last hour, leaving a blessed silence. Best of all, 43% have turned to SUPPORTING England without talking turds from their mouth.

Well played Roy and good luck.

I like Roy Hodgson, carries himself in the right manner, good record and motivated.

I hate his first attempts at team selection however. I cannot for the life of me work out a consistent policy, maybe someone can help me...

If we were going with international experience over club form, then that explains Milner and Downing, but not Carroll or Kelly (the former has had precious little of either, and the latter was statistically outgunned by our own Danny Simpson (not that I'd advocate taking him, but Richards is better than both)).
If he was going for bringing in youth to build for future tournaments, then that explains Carroll's selection over the vastly more useful Holt or Crouch, and that of Wellbeck, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kelly, but not of Gerrard/Lampard/Barry/Terry/Johnson/Parker etc who make up the majority of the squad...

It seems to me picking Capello's old boys, as he stated he was doing, is only half the wacky criteria as well as half these boys weren't in Fab's plans...

So... How exactly does he pick? Because what he's ended up with is a bunch of out-of-form players, a sprinkle of inexperienced youngsters and a whole heap of oldies...

I'm just perplexed by it. If he genuinely sees these players as the best of the best, well we might as well just call the team Liversea and be ready to watch England park the bus every game and hit the woodwork numerous times when we get a chance...

As a side note... Andy Carroll needs how many opportunities to score? It's hilarious everyone saying he's "different"... Yeah the same way Heskey and Crouch are "different", and they would score more goals! Still, at least he's not our worst player... Take a bow Hendo and Downing... You'd never see them go for millio... oh wait

I am so tired of hearing that England players can't pass the ball or, what you hear most often, they can't keep it. When will we realise the culture of this country requires that players get rid of the ball as soon as possible and 'get stuck in' when the opposition have it. We will never change, so let's just stop critisizing players for doing what we demand.

As much as I like Roy Hodgson, I thought he made a very poor team selection.
Daft as it may seem, I was really hoping we would go the same way Germany did, have a complete overhaul, drop our older players, and start afresh with young talent.

It was never going to happen, we do need some experienced players in the side I accept that, but I'm sure we have better available, Cole Terry and Lampard dropped to 'rest them'
were they that much of a miss?
I'm wondering how much, if any pressure is put on Hodgson by the FA regarding team selection and the inclusion of some older players.

It's a bit of a player power problem. Best thing to do is just get shot of all the overpaid overrated has been's who think they're automatic choices and bring some players of the future in.

Yes, picking your nations best players is inexplicable.

The biggest issue against Norway was that the midfield players were to far back. If you watch it back, Carroll was isolated for most of the game, if you're going to use a target man he has to have runners to flick the ball onto. Playing Gerrard for England is the same issue that playing Gerrard for Liverpool creates, great player but just doesn't appear to be suited to any system which bring inbalance to the team.

As for Henderson getting game time.......i'm lost for an explanation!! He looked a decent prospect at Sunderland but has been simply awful at Liverpool.

England are **** simple as that! whatever team selection you make you only have 2 or 3 players that are good enough.

These friendlies are being used as trials and tests to decide which XI go to for in the Euros. All of the players will be cycled to give everyone a chance to audition, so to speak.

    Come on, it's fairly obvious.

I would have taken Crouch over Carroll, Richards over Jones and a massive sag of **** over Downing

I don't think Roy can be criticized over the squad selection. I suspect that it was basically Stuart Pearce's choice, plus a bit of input from Roy.

Carroll was the best player last night, he's come on form just at the right time! Far too late to save the train wreck season Liverpool had, but just in time to propel us to European Glory (and by that I mean barely scraping out the group and then losing on penaltys to someone or other)

Congrats on taking a quote out of context to make yourself look clever dumbass...

Unless you genuinely believe this squad are the best 23 we could have picked, at which point I should direct you towards a "home" Mr Dalglish...
