How many years have major competitions been decided on penalties ? Funny how when an English club side win the Champions League on pens it's 'unfair' all of a sudden ! <doh>

Anyway, my idea is this; After 90mins goalkeepers have to leave the field and only one defender is allowed inside his own team's penalty box at any one time and he's not allowed to handle the ball either. Attacking side must shoot from outside the box or goal is disallowed. Wouldn't take long for someone to score especially if a penalty is given for more than one defender inside their own area. A defender would be allowed to use his hands to try and save the penalty in this instance. You could even take this a bit further to ensure a goal is scored sooner rather than later by removing a player from each side after every ten minutes - Simples !<ok>

one defender one goalie one opposition attacker
Attacker starts on centre spot with ball, defender on edge of 18 yard. If attacker is dispossessed then one point to defending team. If attacker scores one point. Each team has 5 goes.

How about all the players have to hand in their mobile phones at the start of the game, and the team that has the most pictures of naked pissed up women under the age of 21 wins!

Couldn't agree more. The point about Chelsea putting in a great defensive display is right. Football isn't just about goals and attacking. Too often in goalless draws the media say it was boring cos there were no goals or the team that constantly attacked was the better team! In many cases I feel the defensive team was the better team. So apparently amazing last ditch tackled, marking and athletic saves is worse than the attacking team failing to beat the 'keeper, being unable to get past a defender or shooting wide.

For years I have even far more excited by Drury tracking wingers back and performing amazing sliding tackled than an attack where the striker shoots miles wide.

exactly, this all comes down to the fact that they want to elimate defending and tackling as an art make the game more like ****ing basketball.

If no team wins after 90 mins and extra time the players should all get involved in a massive spit roast in the centre circle! That will sort out the men from the boys! <yikes>

Here's a crazy idea. Not quite sure about it but it may work.

If at the end of extra time the teams are still level then each player should try and score a goal from just inside the white box in front of goal. Players from each team then take it in turns with the opposition 'keeper in goal. They can do it as best of five. Of course, each player will have to take this 'free shot' from the same place so a spot may have to be marked inside this white box. If the teams are still level after five shots each they can have a 'sudden death' shoot out.

I know it's a crazy idea and it's a bit out there but it may just work!

How about a cross bar challenge from the half way line! The first team to hit the cross bar wins <ok>

Keep the pens but take them before the start.

Surely the simplest solution is to play on until the next goal is scored. Of course that probably interferes with the television schedules. However, the penaty shoot-out takes at least 15 minutes so if they had continued, who knows, a goal may well have been scored.
Euro 96 was won with a Golden Goal, Bierhoff against the Czechs. But that was played in this country where we used to see sense.
And why would Beckenbauer have any better ideas than e.g. ColuMike?

this is crazy. we already use the best solution - its called a penalty shoot out!! they are exciting and dramatic - you'll never get that kind of excitement with anything else. and it's perfectly fair - i don't know if anybody has noticed this but it's actually a skill to take a penalty... the more you practice, the better you get at them and the more confident you become taking them! blatter; platini, you complete clowns, its not broke so don't try to fix it <ok>

Agreed <ok>. The Champions League final penalty shoot out was quite exciting. Yes, there were poor peanlties, Robben and Scheinsteiger (or something), but there were also some good penalties, Lampard and Luiz (I think). It's just because it was an English team Sepp decides it's not a good idea anymore.

Not a bad idea at all, whoever won the shoot-out would effectively have a 'goal' start. I quite like that idea Mr Paddon <ok>

Unfortunately there isn't a fairer or easier way than a penalty shoot-out - its simple and ultimately decisive. The only way they could reduce the number of times penalties are needed is to re-introduce the golden goal rule over the 30mins extra time (and even extent it for another 10 mins if it helps).

At least this would cut out the times when both teams managed to score in extra time and ended up having to resort to the "unfair" penalty shoot out.

Here's how it should work. A panel of experts watch every knockout game and keep detailed notes of who they think is the best team. After a drawn match they meet together to discuss the match. They come up with an agreed verdict of who should be the winner based on pre-set criteria.

They then anonymyse their paperwork and pass their decision to a review panel. The review panel meets within the next 3 working days. If they endorse the decision then written notification is given to the manager of both teams. The managers then get 28 days to appeal the decision. In the event of an appeal, an independent panel reviews the review panel's decision and notifies the appellant of their decision. The fans are then informed via the media. That way we all know that the best team has won.

In fact, lets scrap the whole unfair and stupid idea of 'goals' and judge every match using this process.
