It is on twitter via SSN that Sep Blatter is looking at an alternative to penalty shoot outs. Any ideas on how else a game could be decided.
I think I may be in a minority but I don't think that anything needs changing, penalty shoot outs are full of drama and great to watch (unless you lose) especially for the neutral. People will complain that some crapper teams play for a draw from the start, but bottom line is the better team has 2 hours of football to find a way through. I say keep 'em
Years ago the Yanks used to do a shoot out, with the forward picking the ball up from either the half way line or ten yards from the 18 yd box. They then had 10 seconds to score past the keeper. Or something like that.
I agree to an extent - it's gripping and exciting, tense etc.. but although I realise it's good that the best team doesn't always win I think it's quite **** when there's a "shock" win via penalties, kinda takes the shock out of it completely. E.g if Accrington knocked out Man Utd 2-1 in the FA Cup, you'd be thinking holy **** they did amazingly well.. whereas penalties just makes you think "Oh. Lucky ****s." And I also think it's just generally a ****e way of deciding a game. Don't ask me for an alternative suggestion though
What happened to Silver and Golden Goal? I quite enjoy a game going to penalties (but not sure how i'd feel if it was City). How about instead of a penalty shoot-out. Both teams get one go at attacking, and one go at defending. The defending team can only have their Keeper and 4 players (i.e. the back four), whereas the attacking team can have all their players - the defending team cannot score, they just have to defend for as long as possible. After both teams have had a go, whoever scored quickest wins.
This came up when the USA got the World Cup in '94. Everybody said it needed changing but never did. I think it's the only way to do it. They did the golden goal extra time for a few years before that was dropped. There really is no alternative. However they could do, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kov2G0GouBw
Sounds reasonable, but after playing for 120 minutes you have to draw a line somewhere, hence penalties. Although the chances are that it wouldn't take particularly long with 5 vs 11, there is the risk that it'd take hours in a few anomalies.
I suppose you could put a 5/10 minute limit on the first team. If they don't score, the other team gets their turn. If neither of them have scored in the time (very unlikely), then you could either give them another go, or take it to penalties.
With the new goal-line technology, perhaps they'll try a "closest to the pin" contest, with the pin in this instance being the goal-line. They could make it like the price is right where you can't go a mm over the line.
Danny Baker ‏@prodnose Dear Sepp. Three thoughts. A) Staring Contest. B) Trivia Question. C) First team to the South Pole.
My idea was just based on the assumption that Blatter wants games to be decided on the type of things which win/lose football games in most circumstances. It takes into account goalkeeping, defence and attack (all elements, not just striking) - rather than just shooting from the spot.
Does anyone else not find it funny when we (we as in English) beat the Germans in a shoot out people start talking about dropping penalties lol, or am I just been paranoid?
I'll go with this option, would definitely be a spectacle that's for sure! Otherwise, why not bring back golden goal and whoever scores first in extra time wins. At least that way, hopefully both teams will be going out for the win rather than trying to hold out for the lottery of penalties.
