http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18205513 Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs. Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes. "Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said. "Football should not go to one to one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence." He added: "Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future." Discuss ???
Blatter doesn't like penalty shoot outs...good reason to keep them then! Discussing on Sky what can be used instead. Shoot outs not fair but I like them. Golden goal.....noooooooooo!
The blokes a complete and utter numpty. For how many years have games been decided by penalties? It's the ****ing rules, stick to them you European ****s.
I don't like them either, particularly when silverware is involved. Not sure what the alternative is though.
I think its a good idea at least to think of alternatives doesnt meant they have to be accepted but its good to see if there would be a better way. You can just keep everything the way it is just because thats the way it is. Having said that I think it would be hard to think of something better but lets see what they come up with.
Blatter's an idiot. There isn't any other way to end a drawn match after 120 minutes. It's cruel on the loser, but it's a fair way of ending the match.
We already had an alternative with Silver and Golden goals. A match can only ever be decided by one team sticking the ball in the net, therefore it's penalties or open play. What on earth is there for a task force to discuss? Shall we go back to Golden Goals, stick with penalties or do that daft thing they do in NHL where the player sweeps in from the halfway line and the minder can still move! Not a long discussion....
Penalty shoot outs are actually fairly recent. Tied games would in the past generally be replayed. Sometimes in the FA Cup, for example, you would get 3 or 4 replays. Fantastic! But there seems to be too much pressure on time today for that to happen so, along came the penalty shoot-out. In USA they used to have a thing where a player would start on the half-way line and have a one-on-one with the goalkeeper like in Ice Hockey. I don't know whether or not they still do that. In some ways its fairer as its less of a lottery than a penalty kick and demands more skill from the attackers and the goalkeeper. Of course they used to spin a coin at some events, so the Euro might come in handy after all
Even if golden goal is brought back (which it shouldn't), penalties will still follow if no goals are scored.
The golden goal made everyone scared to make a mistake. It was intended to make players attack more but had the opposite effect.
they could always have 5 corners/ free kicks each, once its in the keepers hands or out of play swap the attacking and defending sides. He doesnt want 1 v 1 this would still keep an element of football in it, having said that i am sure there are many kinks to work out
Ok, Blatter's a toolbag, but there's no need to shoot down what could be an interesting discussion so soon. Don't like it, just ignore it. Here's some ideas: 1) Have the penalty shoot-out before the game, thus allowing the teams to know what the outcome will be after 120 minutes. That way the team that 'lost' during the shoot-out would have to go on an absolute offensive mad one during extra-time, whilst the other team would go backs to the wall. Could be fun. 2) Reduce the number of players to five each. Classic! Who doesn't love a good 5-a-side? They could still use the full pitch, would be quality. 3) Pie-eating contest. Okay, just kidding, but at least Rickie might get called up to the squad! No need to be all doom and gloom everyone whenever there is a suggestion. Long time ago there never used to be an offside rule. Think how rubbish that must have been.
Personally hate penalty shootouts. Number of corners won. Least amount of fouls committed. Percentage of possession. Anything that can get a result in 120 minutes of football is better than shootouts IMH.
Penalty shoot outs can be unfair (depending on side you support) but are exciting and do rely on skill (shooting and saving) and on courage. I can only imagine the excitement after 120 min of football waiting for corners to be counted!
Pens will be completely taken out of football so............ pens are a important part of football.............. Blatter is a C*** (willy)
