we now know 3 names who will not be on the teamsheet in august. can we hang on to jamie collins. at least gt can now start signing our new defence and midfield but has he enough money available.. sad to see the lads go, but gt knows now what he has to do. will there be many more shocks for him
As I have said on another thread i'm feeling quite deflated at the moment, after being on such a high after promotion . We certainly need some good news to move us on. I'm sure Graham knows what he's doing. Been told Neal isn't staying but havent heard any more yet and would be surprised if Collins stays now. Lots of rebuilding to be done. My dad always said the name on the front of the shirt stays with you but the names on the back come and go. How very true that is.
Much as I rate SCS, I don't feel these departures will have hurt us too much. Sharps and Wroe are not real League One quality IMO and should be fairly easy to replace. Hazell's mentality and leadership skills are better than Sharps', and although he will have got considerably worse following a very lengthy absence, he was our best defender at the start of the season. I don't think he's ready to step up into the first XI, merely that his presence will mean Sharps' departure won't be felt quite so much. Shane is the real problem. Finding a centre-half as composed and technically good at this level is going to be very difficult, and we may see a slight change in playing style. However, in Goldson and Grandison, we have two players whose futures lie at a high level, although Goldson may not be ready to play 40 games a season just yet. I would play Grandison at centre-half along with a new signing, bringing in a new right back. Hurst would be my preference, but there will be a lot of players we've never heard of who will be on Turner's radar, I'm sure! I also feel we need a ball-winning central midfielder and a winger capable of playing on either flank. I would also like to bring in another forward and loan out Bradshaw irrespective of what happens with Collins, and another new striker if he does leave. Williams from Yeovil would probably be my shout. Oh, and we do of course need a keeper. Chris Weale, released by Leicester?
Someone pointed out elsewhere that SCS was probably on a high wage thanks to the previous dictatorship and that might be part of the problem there.
Ah yes. 'Tis a good point, that. Still, I would've made it a priority to keep him. Then again, I've not been in football for close to 50 years!
Well our wage books are clear now that Sharps, SCS, Wroe and possibly Neal have gone. Let's hope Collins gives us a ray of light. It does mean though that we have lots of available wages to spend on the squad, don't forget that Turner was only in League One recently with Hereford so does know what to do to survive.
It is a great shame to lose the excellent pairing of SCS and Sharps as they were the rock on which our promotion bid was forged. GT will have his work cut out to replace this sort of quality. I would be surprised if Neale can get a better offer due to his unfortunate habit of away blunders. There is a rumour that Gunnar Nielsen (Faroe Isles international keeper) is coming in. Collins is the one we really need to keep and at least he is still talking to the club. Anyway if he does go surely we will get at least £300 K in compensation. It promises to be a very interesting few weeks!
i dont think that we would get compensation for collins because he was not a product of our youth team? correct me if im wrong...
They would take into consideration the fact that villa did a lot of the investment in him. I wonder if villa have any clauses on him.
These departures were always on the cards. In the case of SCS it appears that he had decided to move on before a new contract was even offered. GT has gone on record as saying that the reason why Wycombe and Chesterfield struggled last season was that they failed to revamp the teams sufficiently. This is all part of a cunning plan, hopefully not one of Baldrick's.
the shopping list should be possibly 2 x gk depending on neal, 2 defenders, 2 midfield and at least 1 up front if jc goes. at present we have a squad of 12 plus 3 here today gone tomorrow players. over to you gt
That's a bit of a long commute, surely it would've been better from his point of view to stay with us if that's the case?
Apparently, a certain pantomime dame is now saying that he tried to sign Sharps in January for Crawley----100K!!!
We wouldn't be where we are now if we'd have sold him! http://www.shrewsburytown.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10443~2785343,00.html Looks like Turner expected them to go. Maybe not Sharps as much but defo the other two.
Evans says Sharps was easily persuaded and Sharps says it was the most difficult decision he has ever had to make in his footballing career, I know who I believe.
Evans is a complete twat. I have never met anyone so universally hated, I mean, even half the Rotherham fans hate him! I reckon we would've still gone up had we signed a top centre-back/right-back with the 100k though.
