So we've established that the only reason Rangers are a big club is because of bigotry (laughing as I type this)

So why are Celtic a big club then?

You do realise the presbyterian & methodist churches were feeding Irish immigrants back then.

    Queens Park

Sir John Ure Primrose was chairman from 1912-23. A glasgow born businessman his family owned a flour mill.

William Brown (1912), Joe Donnachie (circa.1914–1918) and John Jackson (1917). Thereafter, Catholic players prior to Mo Johnston's signing include: Laurie Blyth (1951–1952), Don Kitchenbrand (1955–1956), Hugh O'Neill (1976), John Spencer (1985–1992)

jings medro you are not going to argue that it was a coincidence that, in a hundred years, 7 catholic players played for rangers are you?

look it was daft, it was bigoted, it was wrong, and actually rangers should be congratulated for ending it

but dont pretend it didnt happen man - that just looks daft

So what if it did? That doesnt explain why Rangers and Celtic are huge in comparison with the rest of the other SPL teams which is what the original post is about numb nuts.

Celtic were formed so that Irish immigrants wouldn't be "lost" to the Presbyterian / Methodist church.
    That's my point.

    Money and success.

Both clubs have an inflated fan base that wouldn't be there, if there wasn't the realistic opportunity of silverware. Now i blame david murray for causing this as scottish football was nice and competitive before he made it all about money.

IMO Celtic and Rangers are as big as they are due to inbred contempt of each other (fans that is, not the clubs).

Like has already been stated, Rangers were found simply as a sporting institution for all the right reasons, Celtic as a charity for the Irish Catholic immigrants who fled to Glasgow. This all went fine until the Protestants felt an uprising in Catholicism in Glasgow.

Over the next 80-90 yrs Rangers were referred to as the Protestant Club and Celtic the Catholic Club. Nothing unites peoples hatred of each other more than Religion. While most believe that this is all said and done since Rangers abolished the unwritten policy of refusing to sign Catholic players, it is still there on BOTH sides of the divide. Otherwise we would not be having new anti bigotry laws introduced into Scotland, or reading in the papers every other day about another Sectarian attack on an Old Firm fan.

It is this hatred and contempt that has propelled both clubs to try and out do the other, in the process building strong foundations and owners inputting large amounts of cash to ensure the job gets done on the field. David Murray admitted, he would spend whatever it took to win the Champs League. This due to Celtics own personal 'Big Cup' win in the 60's, which obviously ate away at Murray, never having seen it in the Ibrox dressing room.

You just have to look at how both clubs still try to out do each other at every turn in order to pander to the fans that love to hate the other more than they love there own. Not all fans subscribe to this pettiness, but it does make up a very large part of our respective clubs support.
