Following on from the other thread - the greatest single moment, how about reliving the less happy times. Not looking for 1 single moment, maybe just a few of the unhappy days while watching our beloved team. For me, the following. 1. At the time, I was in Norethern Ireland but I do recall the last game of Division 1 (now PL). Coventry v Everton. Coventry were in deep do do at the time and had to win. Everton were one of the best teams of that era - should have been a foregone conclusion that Cov would go down. 4-1 to Cov, as Everton fielded a very understrength team - end result was Norwich went down instead :-( I was truly gutted that day! 2. The day Chris Sutton was sold to Blackburn. Chairman (Robert Chase) said just a few months earlier "If Chris Sutton leaves - I will leave" or words to that effect. It was also round this time we lost Darren Beckford, Ruel Fox - basically our front line (all transfers). It was the beginnning of the end for that era. 3. Mike Walker left for Everton! We were flying high in the PL (again!) and looking good for Europe (again!). Thanks to Robert Chase letting players go, Mike Walker left! All downhill after that. 4. Losing to Sunderland in the FA Cup semi at Hillsborough. We were missing our talisman Robert Fleck - was very hard to swallow. We also lost to Everton in the semis at Villa Park but that one did not hurt so much, didn't really expect us to win that day. 5. Watching Man Utd fans rip the ground apart in the 70's. What an awful day. I was only about 14 at the time and it was all so scary. West Ham did the same that season but nowhere near as bad.
Apart from the ones you said: 1. 6-0 against Fulham. Couldn't get a ticket so was stuck watching Charlton drawing with palace, with the fans at one point singing Norwich are winning one-nil! 2. Every single week of Brian Hamilton's tenure. 3. Remember watching us being demolished 5-0 against Wolves with the headline: dunces with wolves. 4. Brentford beating us in the FA cup and standing outside protesting having the feeling that Chase would never go. 5. I remember being gutted for Brian Gunn when his daughter died. 3.
The relegation from the Championship to League One. The lowest point I have ever had being a City fan, I was absolutely furious and if I'm to be honest still show quite a lot of disdain towards the certain members of the board, ex managers and players. Thai Canary I heard that many years later some city fans pushed a couple of parked cars belonging to visiting Manchester United fans into the river, nobody forgets things like having your ground trashed.
The play-off final, watching Darryl Sutch mess up and us miss out, I was gutted. Similar feelings about the 6-0 at Fulham. Huckerby's final game on loan, when we didn't think we'd get him back? Great game, but a sad moment.
God reading that lot brings back some gut wrenching feelings! The two fa cup semi final defeats were hard to take, as well as the quarter final defeat to Brighton(jimmy casecheating b#sted) im not still bitter about that one, much. Any defeat to the scumincluding Gunnys "air kick" or Megsons own goal prompting Town fans to have his name printed on there shirts ! Lets not dwell on this to much & think how GOOD it is going to feel to complete a memorable double over the scum & promotion back to the promised land! OTBC City till I die
For me the worst moment does not involve Norwich directly, but affected Norwich. The event - Liverpool v Juventus 1985, Hysel Stadium. It was because of a few mindless idiots that 39 people got killed and all english clubs (including Norwich, who had qualified for Europe by winning the Milk Cup) were banned from European Competition. It wasn't until the ban was lifted and we qualified under Mike Walker that we managed to play in europe, yet under the ban, we would have qualified twice for Europe finishing 5th and 4th in the Premier League under Dave Stringer.
Good call Jedi - the ban from Europe was terrible! but it was well worth the wait when we finally got to play European ties. Will never forget home games against Vittesse, Bayern & Inter games - what fantastic nights they were. Especially the VIttese game - our European baptism, and we destroyed them with a blinding performance from Ekoku.
Northamptonncfc - you are spot on, people do not forget. Ever since that day I simply hated Man Utd and just love it when they lose, just wish it would happen more often!
The way things have gone these last 18months id forgotten about all the bad moments in the past. But i would have to say, the worst moments for me are..... 1)Being on a bus in 1987/88 and seeing on the edp board outside a newsagent that Kevin Drinkell had been sold. 2)losing 5-0 away to Arsenal live on ITV which virtually killed of our title ambitions (god its weird saying that) 3)losing the semi final of the fa cup to Sunderland in 1992 (this is probably the biggest disappointment) the other semi final loss v everton was overshadowed by Hillsbrough which happend on the same day. Actually i think the sunderland game was the first semi at hillsbrough after the disater..... 4)losing 5-0 to Ipswich whilst watching it on a beamback to carrow road. 5)seeing Phil Mulryne break his leg from a christian Daily tackle. 6)Bryan Gunns Air Kick v ipswich from a robert ullathorne back pass. 7)relegation from the premier league in 1995 8)relegation from the premier league by losing 6-0 to Fulham 9)Darren huckerbys contract not being extened by roeder. 10)GLENN ROEDER. To be honest we could have done a list just for worst moments under Glen Roeder which would have had lots of seperate entries just for that.
Losing 5-0 away to Arsenal live on ITV which virtually killed of our title ambitions God yes, I forgot that one - and I was at Highbury to see it! Really was a hell of a performance by Arsenal that day, simply tore us apart. How about 7-1 defeat away at Blackburn????? I forgot about that one too until now. Brian Gunns head was not right that day due to his daughters plight at the time. I was never sure why he did actually play that day but credit to him for trying to wear a brave face. If I remember correctly we were at the top of the PL before that game.
