    From the Sunday Sun.....

Danny Simpson: I want to stay at Newcastle United
May 20 2012 by Neil Cameron, Sunday Sun

DANNY SIMPSON last night emphasised his desire to stay at Newcastle United and blasted claims he is being greedy over his contract demands.
Right-back Simpson, 24, has a year left on his present deal after negotiations broke down following the rejection of the club’s offer in February, reportedly to be £25,000- a-week.
The stand-off has led to fears he could be sold this summer with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Fulham all being linked with the Toon Army favourite.
However, Simpson himself insisted he only wants the same pay as any established Premier League player.
He said: “I’m not a greedy player and I just want to be on par with the other players around me. In football terms, what I’m asking for is by no means outrageous.
“I want to stay at this club and I’ve been saying that all season. I’ve recently had a baby, I’m happy here and so is my family.
“Hopefully me and the club can find some solution. I want to stay but if I have to move, then I will accept it and move on.”

Simpson is like any professional in that he wants to make the most out of what is a short career and that is why he is holding out for an improved contract.
He still could leave, but that would be a massive wrench for the former Manchester United player who signed for Newcastle in 2010 for £750,000.
Simpson said: “Newcastle is a great club, what with 50,000 screaming Geordies at the game every week. Why would I want to leave? There is speculation but I want to state, like I have all season, I want to stay.
“Over the last two years I’ve played nearly 80 games and started most of them.
“I’m not being greedy, this club is on the up, the manager and staff are brilliant – I want to stay.”
If a deal is not agreed then Newcastle would look to offload him instead of leaving it a year and watching a first-team star walking out of the club for nothing.

A bit contradictory as a says he's not greedy.... Yet wants to be on the same as those around him.... Colo? HBA?... Saylor?? He's got to be asking for another £20k at least!

It's a strange one, in theory since he has played in more games than pretty much everyone else in the side he is making as much of a contribution so deserves to be on the same money. It's not as simple as that though unfortunately for him, for he's an extremely limited player and almost everyone except him knows it. The brass certainly do, and they know that if he refuses to sign they can just **** him off and quite easily replace him with as good or better.

I think the rabid grief he gets from some folk is a little harsh but I certainly won't be losing a wink of sleep over his potential departure.

The club will have had an offer and by doing things this way they can say Simspon wanted to leave, we made him a good offer but he decided not to take it.

I can see where he's coming from, but I signed Jorge Pina on FM at Southampton in League 1, and was still paying him £1,500 a week in the Premier League, and he didn't complain.

The problem is he's not as GOOD as the players around him and isn't a good enough performer to make top dollar. Move the greedy ****er on and we will get someone who isn't inept.

It depends what he means by the players around him. I'd put him on par with the sort of '2nd tier' players presumably on around 30k a week. However, the big key players like Colo, Cabaye, Ben Arfa and co, not a chance.

Didn't we concede like 7 goals in the 4 games he missed?

Pards will have the final say in what he thinks Simmo is worth.

If it's not enough then it's time to move on.

It'll be a pity to start breaking up a wining team but maybe a replacement has already been lined up.

I don't think just because players ask for more wages that they're being greedy.

But some players need a reality check and 20k a week for Simmo is all he deserves IMO.

He's helped us get a lot of points this season with goal line clearances, and he's played more games than any other Newcastle player this season.
Yes, he has limitations, but if he's as **** as you guys like to make out why does he get in the team every week ahead of Perch, R. Taylor, and keeps Santon out of position?

He deserves a fair wage - At least as much as S. Taylor is on, considering he misses large parts of every season.

As I said on another thread, we've got Santon, Perch & Raylor who can all play right back so I don't think Simpson has much leverage in the negotiations.

Personally, I would sell him on and get two left footed full backs and another CB. <ok>

As always we don't know the figures offered, or the figures wanted. Its all just paper speculation and its wise not to be to down on him or the club. No way of knowing if he is being greedy or the club tight. Hopefully they'll sort something out but its just part and parcel of modern football.

I cringe when I hear people calling him greedy and so forth despite having no factual knowledge of his offer or demands.

Cracking season and it would be nice to see him stay but sometimes things are not meant to be.

Danny has saved us a few times with those off the line blocks and I would like him to stay. Greedy not sure about that, he's young with a family and is just thinking about his his future which is something we all have done.

Hard to know what to think without knowing hte details, and of course neither club nor player want to relase the details (quite rightly).

He is a solid player who has contributed greatly to a great season. That is worth a decent wage.

He is also pretty easily replaceable. If it's a case that the club is offering £25k and he wants £30k, well fair enough. They'll sort it out.

If the club is offering £25k and he can make £40k somewhere else, fair enough again. Let's make a profit on him, thank him for his efforts and forget about him. Can't blame him for wanting to be paid the best wage he can get but he's not worth losign sleep over

I don't think he's holding a shotgun at anyone's head, he just wants parity with some of the other players. He's had a good season and it would be a pity to break the team up, and how much would his replacement be getting?

I don't think Perch is on a big wage.

Basically I agree though - - if what he is asking for is in the reasonable range, then continuity is worth something.

Was reading yesterday that he said he wants to stay but only my terms, won't be too upset if he goes.
