Yes I'd tend to agree, there's a pretty good German film called the Edukators which shows a group of young left wing activists come to this conclusion.

I've got a friend from Austria and I was amazed that one of their leading partys, given their relatively recent history, was a far-right party which garner a larger share of the votes than the Lib Dems typically acheive. Equally a far right party appears to be emerging in Greece? When there's huge evidence to suggest that governments had given tax breaks to huge shipping companys, doctors were able to have a taxable salary of 10k, bribes being common place on things right the way down to getting your MOT papers, they still believe immigration was the issue? Well, given that country's current state emmigration will be the massive issue for years to come

Do you include private schooling in that 'privileged system'? If so, that's BS.

Youth culture has been one of the UKs greatest exports for the last 60 years, and in many parts of Europe it is common to see groups of young people imitating "English" fashions and attitudes. I went to the London International Ska Festival at the O2 in Islington recently, and in amongst the oldsters like me re-living the 1970s, there were several groups of Skinheads and Rude Boys/Girls from all over Europe. As well as Harringtons, Crombies, Doctor Martens, Mohicans etc, we also gave our European neighbours the Soccer Casual, or "Hooligan".

Whilst all these youth movements have pretty much died out in the UK, in many parts of Europe they still thrive, the more so the further East you go. For many, it is not enough to imitate British youth culture, they will want to compete with it and prove themselves as good or better than us. The best way for Ukrainian "firms" to up their reputation will be through fighting with the English fans, and I have no doubt whatsover that there will be large Ukrainian gangs roaming the streets looking for our supporters. I would advise anyone travelling the Euros to be exercise great caution, stay with their group, and get back to their hotel early at night.

One other thing you can be sure of is that if trouble does break out, then no matter the circumstances or the provocation, the English will get the blame.

This, the English still hold the reputation of being the 'best', and these up and coming eastern countries want to try their luck against the 'best'. The fact of the matter is however, they are 30 years too late and probably would have been given a right shoeing back in the 80's.

yeah I don't think the late 80's is only just filtering over to them, I suspect, referring to themselves as Ultra's, they will be aware that the italians are the chic thugs. They'll want to prove themselves against them if any, bit like the serbs recently

I was going to go but pulled out as I couldn't afford the outrageously over-priced accomodation.

    Glad I'm not going now!!

Anyone who is going to the Ukraine shouldn't take any risks. Tips:

    * Attack them before they attack you! It may look like a grandma with her grandson but you can't risk it, strike hard and fast and run away (remember to take photos of them to show police).
    * The more screaming and crying, the more they are likely to attack you back so make sure they are silent.
    * You see what appears to be a school? Strike everyone down before you get your head caved in!
    * Always carry weapons in case they start shouting for help...keep them quiet

These are a few tips to help you survive in the Ukraine. Poland however is lovely. I'd recommend the salt mine near Krakow and of course Auschwitz and the other camps. Also, visit Krakow at night to see the square lit up like 1000 suns caressing the ocean in the summer air.

I think Godders is right. Studies have shown that the higher your IQ, the more likely you are to embrace left-wing philosophy. (I'll post a link if I can remember where I read it). I think it's pretty silly to label followers of the extreme left as "young, idealistic people" as if they're just being naive and will grow out of it. That's a very annoying view that too many people in this country hold. Political views are supposed to be idealistic. The most intelligent people in the world, the likes of Noam Chomsky and others, are pretty extreme lefties.

A bit off-topic but it sounds like prosecution in the Hague have dropped an absolute clanger today. Six month adjournment for Mladic over a procedural error, and that's without any further delays that the defence will inevitably come up with. Nightmare.

Yes but you said the more educated you are the more likely to be left wing so do you now disagree with that statement? I agree that experiences dictate political ideology. Many people will have experience of recessions caused by irresponsible left wing governments and hence swing to the right. There's clearly no hard and fast rule.

Oh and by the way I went to a state school in special measure. Also I haven't actually said what side I favour. Just my observations.

What I meant is if your young and idealistic your more likely to be left wing I didn't say if that's good or bad. I would be interested to see that study because I would have intelligent people would be evenly spread.

Can't find the article I originally read, but found this one: http://www.tgdaily.com/general-scie...t-people-more-likely-to-be-left-wing-atheists.

Also found a similar article in the Daily Mail, but I don't like to reference that trash.

But the English are still seen as the best. The English were having tear ups before all the designer gear came in. That came about because of the Scousers on tour, nicking Italian fashion. It is well known they regard us as the best and want to prove themselves.

That's a fair point, but it's the difference between voting for what's best for you and voting for what you think is best for society. I have a feeling that most conservatives are only concerned with the former. Hopefully I'll always be the latter.

yes! pretty sure the electorate where I'm from, who have continually voted in Oliver Letwin since 1997, havn't done so because it best serves society! If they have they're deluded

My constituency of Harpenden and Hitchin is the same. It's a very well-off area, so they're only ever going to vote one way.
