    <laugh>

So consistency in applying the rules is out the window then as it's now at the discretion of the person reading them to decide what they mean <laugh>

I've predicted 8th, but thats being very optimistic, McLaren will have to try something special with the strategy and hope for a safety car half way through the race. I think the only positive its not Monaco.

I agree with Genji, the stewarts have followed the rules and thrown the book (albeit harshly) at Mclaren. It wouldn't surprise me if an element of this was to set a precedent too, to stop anyone else trying it in the future.

Of course, if you can fake a technical problem forcing you to stop.....

Good point but I mean in terms of organised, pre-meditated action. Doing a purple sector under yellow flags may be dangerous but it isn't necessarily so and it is something the team has no control over. Point taken, though, that that rule exists to ensure safety is never compromised.

I think it is but the competitor obviously has to ensure he can meet that requirement. Clearly, Hamilton couldn't get back to the pits and provide a sample.

Does seem a bit odd. If you cut a corner on one lap, does that then mean that you lose all your other timed laps too?

, mclaren were caught cheating in 2007 and fined $100 million and then again mclaren and hamilton were caught lying at aus 2009 , they were caught again at canada 2010 and now once again they are caught cheating , it is happening to often with mclaren to now be just a coincidence ,

can we ever trust them ever again ?

Strange. I didn't suggest striving for consistency should be abandoned. As with referees in football, human reaction is inevitable and discretion has to be employed in the application of rules because all incidents are different. The alternative is zero tolerance (complete consistency), which would stifle competition. In this case, I've explained why I think the rules have been applied correctly, if harshly.

Incidentally, I could make my quiz all about the Hamilton fanboyz we've known who can't bear to hear any criticism of their idol. <laugh>

I don't follow you, Westy? The usual penalty for cutting a corner in qualifying would be to have that single lap time deleted.

    Apparently this is what happened:

On Inside F1 Gary Anderson explained that the fuel man had the switch set to 'drain', switched it back to 'fill' but failed to refill enough before Lewis was called out for his last lap, even though he had 20 seconds to spare and could have stayed back for the three extra seconds he would have needed to fill up properly.

Sounds like another kind of fuel panic to me. Just plain stupid, aren't these people trained to deal with pressure in a calm, controlled way?

A football referee has seconds to make their decisions. The stewards have hours, the full set of FIA rules to look at and the use of Charlie Whiting to ensure decisions are consistent and the punishment suitable enough to fit the crime. Something has gone very wrong today.

Please do make your quiz about that. Would actually be quite funny and different from the norm!

McLaren made a mistake on one lap and have been dsq'd from the entire session. Think that is Westy's point.

To be honest Chris, I really believe that the harshness of the penalty was the FIA/FOM getting a perfect opportunity for some cheap, high-profile publicity which they took to the detriment of the sport, as usual.

Unbelievable... F1 is a ****ing joke. Any bloody excuse and they throw the book and the whole ****ing library at McLaren.

I'm sick of the inconsistency of rule application. I bet Hamilton is bloody livid.

I hope that is not true, but there is a lot that just doesn't make sense today. F1 is doing really well this year with all the different winners so no need to make some controversy just for the sake of it.

I think everyone accepts a penalty was due, but they've just gone nuts with it.

Bingly, will you read post #49 for a reasonable explanation of what happened? Then tell me that's not a mistake.
