Know some rate the lad... So yes he'll make it, or no he should be loaned or sold? ................................................ DAVID Meyler remains confident he can force his way into Martin OâNeillâs plans after insisting he has never contemplated leaving Wearside. Meyler has made just one first-team start for Sunderland this season after returning to contention last October following a second long-term absence with knee ligament damage. The 22-year-old has been a regular on the bench under OâNeill, but has made just one substitute outing since February, despite the Black Cats boss expressing a wish to see his fringe players over the seasonâs finale. However, despite interest in a loan move for Meyler from the Championship, the Irish midfielder is determined to return for pre-season training in peak condition in a bid to impress OâNeill ahead of his first full campaign in charge. Meyler told the Echo: âObviously, I havenât played as much as I would have wanted to. âBut I have never even considered leaving or going out on loan. âI havenât gone knocking on the managerâs door or anything. I just want to do my talking on the pitch. âI want to play for Sunderland and I want to play for the manager. âYou have to keep believing. Iâve played 20-odd games for Sunderland and thereâs no point in getting down. âYou just have to keep on working hard and trying to improve as a player. âWe are coming to the end of the season now, with one game left on Sunday and then after that I will start looking to the future. âI work as hard as I can in training all week in the hope of playing at the weekend and thatâs exactly what I will be doing again next season. âI will do some work over the summer and aim to come back for pre-season fitter than ever. âIâm just looking forward to a full pre-season, because it is very hard to catch up if you miss out on that.â Meyler is likely to be on the bench again on Sunday as Sunderland host a Manchester United side determined to pip neighbours Manchester City for the Premier League crown
I am pretty sure Meyler is one of the "young" players that MON will test during the pre-season. WHatever happens, he should not be sold. Loaned out for half a season maybe, possibly to a newly promoted team, so he can get needed experience then back to us to stake his claim.
Think the injuries have taken there toll on Meyler, think Mon will play him preseason and make a judgement from thereon.
Loan him out if possible to a Fizzy pop side to beef him up and test his injury, sounds nasty but it is the only way.
Sell him for me. There's better out there. Not surprised he keeps himself quiet, I'd be perfectly happy picking up 20k+ a week to do not a lot.
He wa looking superb before the injuries, athletic, mobile, decent pace. I haven't seen that since, at all. He deserves a pre-season not in physio, then a judgement call. I still think he's got a chance.
He is living off a short but good run before his injury and I think that if he was anything like that MON would be playing him, why would he not?
bit harsh that. From the interview, it seems he wants to play for us and take his time coming back from the injuries he had. he doesnt give me the impression that he saying nothing so he can continue picking up a pay check.
I have never rated the kid really. Everyone raves about him, but I'm fairly sure he played something like 5-10 games in a row. IMO he is not good enough, we have 4 players easily better at CM than him. I wouldn't be too bothered if he was sold or loaned.
Personally I haven't seen anything from this kid to say that he is a premiership standard player, he has been here for 4 years now and has had 14 starts in that period, I have read comments on here describing him as ,superb , excellent, best in his position at the club, really don't see it or understand how you can come to this conclusion after 14 starts in 4 years. Don't really want to have a go at the kid as all he is doing is trying to make a go of it after some bad injuries, and I wish him the best of luck, however don't see anything in his game that makes me think he is a good enough standard for a team that will be pushing for top 8 finish next season, more to the point don't think MON see's it either.
If 14 games are too soon for us to say that he is premiership standard, surely 14 games is too few to say that he has nothing in his game that makes him good enough? Cant have it both ways
Give him a pre season. If he's good enough loan out till January to hopefully ensure he is OK. if positive bring him back and sell Catts.
I don't need it both ways I am responding to lads on here saying this kid is superb, excellent and best at club in his position. After 14 starts in 4 years this kid hasn't shown me anything to suggest he has a future at our club, which is a shame, like I said nothing against the lad and I hope he proves me wrong (can't see it ) What I am surprised at ,which is why I posted is that a few on here have put him to such a standard I feel we are talking about 2 different players
Give the lad a break for fooks sake he's only 22. Had it not been for the outstanding form of Colback he'd have had more games! This is the first chance of having a pre-season for years, so hopefully he can have the chance to get back to the standard he was a couple of seasons ago!
Again , this is why I commented on this post, you say hopefully he gets back to the standard he was a couple of seasons ago. I never saw a standard set a couple of seasons ago. Maybe my fault is definition of words , you pair Colback with the word outstanding , now I have to say that I think Colback is probably the most improved player this year and by his standard has had a good season but to say he was outstanding, I don't get it
Yes I think he's been outstanding the way he's cemented his place as a guaranteed first team player. He's been consistent in both midfield and Leftback. Obviously he's not the finished article yet but he will become a top player for us! People on these boards were loving Meyler a couple of seasons ago, and now they are shooting him down! Give him chance to have a clean slate with the rest of the squad in July and get a couple of pre-season games under his belt. He's a year younger than James McClean, and who'd have thought he'd make the impact he has a year ago!
