If this is correct, it appears one of the main qualifications for applicants to replace NB will be the ability to run a club on a shoestring....

Carlisle boss Abbott flies under the radar as Hull look to replace sacked Barmby
    By SAMI MOKBEL

Carlisle manager Greg Abbott has emerged as a shock contender to become new Hull City manager.
The 48-year-old just missed out on securing a play-off spot with the League One club this season - but has impressed the Hull board with the way he has worked with a minimal budget.
Abbott spent four years at Hull as player in the mid-nineties, making 124 league appearances for the Tigers.
Former Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies is also on the shortlist.

I reckon that is the main qualification for the job "value for money".

Dammit, you mean they won't be looking for someone who will want to spend millions on expensive luxury players on exorbitant wages?? How the hell will we get promoted with that attitude?

Seriously, thrifty, budget, and sensible are not bad words for a football club.

Neither are experienced and proven! Neither of which Greg Abbott can offer in anywhere near the quantities that Billy Davies or Mick McCarthy can.
I think, however, that given the Allams are clueless as to how to run a football club Greg Abbott will be right up there with the favourites (and that's not meant to be a slur on Abbott, merely an assessment of what is available).

Agree with you Strov, no slur on GA but if he is the calibre the current owners are looking at recruiting then i,m not too convinced, when there are one or two proven at our level names in the hat. Just hope this is resolved sooner then later, as I feel a little apathy setting in at the moment.

Hold on there me old fruit!!!
That's not necessarily the case. If GA knows how to get the best out of our money then surely that's a good thing? Our track record for splashing the cash in the last few years has been awful. 2 of our last 3 biggest transfers have truly backfired.
Bullard £5+ with no money back when sold.
Olifinjana £3m+ and looking very likely the same result as the Smack Rat.
Off the top of my head, only Stephen Hunt yielded anything like the transfer fee we spent.
Where as our record with spending very little such as Stewart (£300k), Hobbs (£800k), Chester (£300k), Michael Turner (£250k?), Sam Ricketts (£150k?),or signing free transfers such as Koren, Rosenior for example, has been far better.
Maybe buying £2/3/4m players on £30k/wk isn't necessarily the way to go?
Just because we have a budget of £? Thousand or million, doesn't mean we HAVE to spend it all at once.
Our budget will mainly depend upon who we can get rid of.
Olifinjana's £28,000/week would bring in 3 good championship players or 2 very good championship players, the same for Ghilas, Kilbane, Harper, Adebola and the rest of the released/retired players. If we use those resourced wages sensibly, we could bring in 7 or 8 on good wages but without putting the club in further trouble.
What I'm saying is, I don't want our transfer budget blowing on one or two knobheads (like a certain James Bullard) when it can be spent wisely on 4 or 5 on good wages and more importantly, players who want to be here.

If its GREGG ABBOTT there will be a riot so too speak. Then again as Ehab Allam is now running the show he will think G.A. is good. Cannot see it myself as the Allams have some massive rabbits to pull out of the hat now. imo.

Good post but the next manager will set out where Hull Citys true ambitions lay. GA would simply be a cheap option for a mid table championship team at best. That will cost the Allams millions in the Long Term. imo.

and Evans (ok he only played once for them)

I haven't been on here anything like regularly strov and i can't be arsed to read through your previous posts, but you might as well replace Abbott's name on your post with Barmby's back when we appointed him and i'd hazard a guess you supported that.
Abbott's proven as a manager with an eye for a young player (3 of our Man Utd youngsters for example) and is also proven at getting them playing well (which got at least one of them Walsh's attention). Not a bad manager imo, he's not proven at this level but neither was Lambert with Norwich and that worked out ok.

All of the managers that are linked with us have their positives and negatives (Davies for example is an annoying squeaky voiced little whinging scottish twat...) If the one we appoint gets us promoted ****ing great, i'll listen to their annoying squeaky scottish twattish voice singing we are going up on a mic at wembley and i'd ****ing enjoy it!

I agree with that completely. There are teams who do well by buying sensibly on a small budget.

But if that is their stance then they need to cut the crap about £40k a week strikers. They can't have it both ways.

I thought it was posters on here who were saying that we have little or no budget. I could be wrong but I don't think the Allams have said anything about a summer budget have they?

No that I know of, I was referring to them going on about offering money to Nick in January, something I don't believe for a second.
