It still looks better than a proper stepped nose but it does have the look of the platypus about it.

A nose taken straight from an old Minardi would look better than a stepped nose though.

AMuS have picked up on the brake duct tyre temperature management system (BDTTMS), believing McLaren can adjust both front and rear tyre temperature management at pit stops, but here's a comparison of the nose:

McLaren looking for as many tenths as possible if they're making that car look like the rest on the grid.

Scarbs: Macs brake adjuster opens a window in the duct to let more or less heat out thru he wheel, this alters tyre temp too.

No wonder McLaren have been so quiet lately, they got a couple of ace cards up their sleeve. But its the usual question, can they take full advantage before others copy? We shall see.

I don't know what everyone is on, I think the new front end is lovely! it compliments the streamlined agility of the rest of the car. I've been wanting Mclaren to go with a front end like this since they adopted the new Brawn style nose as I think it looks awful now.

the way the nose seems to bloat out into a thick body reminds me of the Blackburn Buccaneer which used the Whitcomb area rule to reduce drag at speed. Looks odd but still better than those with a step, I suppose having a low chassis helps. Best of both worlds with this design perhaps?

So far it's been a good reason why Paffet and Turvey were out testing rather than Button and Hamilton. Lesser the publicity, the harder to find out what's making them quick.

    were they quick in testing?

So much for not having any major new dev's. New nose, and tire management in via a new heat diffuser is something they will need to get on top off. Fair play to them not having their drivers in for that, no use in JB and LH being dead familier with a system that hasn't had its optimum setting discovered.

I mean in general, not just testing.

Other teams would like to "discover" little tricks from any front running package to give them an extra tenth or two.

First draft from @ScarbsF1 on the adjustable brake duct management system:

This appears to be what the mechanic behind Hamilton's left shoulder is doing.

Is there any explanation for the guy behind Hamilton's right shoulder? Could be doing the same to the front brake ducts.

Could well be. It's something for us to watch out for in the coming GPs.

It is possible that the test was more of a shakedown for the new parts to check the basic data and reliabilty. When they get to Spain, I wouldnt be suprised to see Lewis and JB testing them and comparing to the pre season data where they had a successful test. Its the perfect opportunity to see if any of the new developments they are bringing actually bring any more speed or stabilty to the car - especially as the Bracelona track is more reflective of the european season!

I could be an Ace, or they could just be scrambling for tenths?

Looks like he's just stopping the car from rocking on the stands, but what it looks like and what it actually is is usually different in f1 ;)

His left hand looks like he has a screwdriver in position ready to give it a turn when both front tyres are off.

    Possibly.

Left hand is holding the air inlet above the driver, his right hand is holding the side pod. I think he's just steading the car. Can't imagine there are adjustable ducts on the front brakes to channel hot air to the wheels as there is no hot exhaust gas going in them to heat the tyres

The heat comes from the brakes, I think. Opening the brake ducts allows air in to cool the brakes (and, in this case, tyres), closing them off limits the amount of air coming in to cool them thus running the brakes and tyres hotter so it should be achievable on front and rear wheels.
