Good question The only thing I can think of is that Gibson is the only fit central midfielder we have who plays in an attacking role. Scholes, Carrick and Fletcher all tend to play very deep. So even having Gibson on the pitch forces someone from the opposition to mark him, thus occupying one of the opposition's players at least some of the time and freeing up space for Rooney to work his magic. Pretty weak explanation, but it's all I've got...
