With an away victory (1-2 against Cardiff) the Lasses have finished top of the league AGAIN. Next week they are in the cup final (against Leeds) How they didn't get into the Womens super league was a right travesty. Haway the Lasses.
It was said half jestingly, I'm by no means against it, just thoroughly disinterested in it and don't see how anyone could not be. Nowhere near the quality of the mens game, and football is a sport for athletes. Men are quite clearly better athletes than women (in general). I also think women's football is totally undermined by the fact that as soon as a lineswoman (Sian Massey) looks quite promising, she is carted off to the mens game. How is anyone meant to take womens football seriously when that happens?
No. They were denied entry into the super league (stitched up) when they were a much better team than half of the now super league teams. Consequently, some of our lasses went to play for super league teams to help their international ambitions (you can't blame the lasses for that) There were teams from lower leages than SAFCW who got into the super league. SAFCW finished near the top of the last 'normal' league and they beat all the top sides. They were FA Cup finalists that last year and lost to Arsenal 2-1. In short, we should have been an automatic choice for the super league and I reckon there were bungs a plenty. Our problem was we played it straight, believing in a good bid with our record speaking for itself. It seems to me that whoever made the decisions of who was 'in' or 'out' liked money.
I honestly believe that the quality of womens football has come on leaps and bounds in the last ten years or so, and I have been very impressed with the levels of skill I have seen on the rare occasions they get TV coverage.
I know a girl who now plays for the Sunderland ladies, she used to be a friend of mine, genuinely a very average quality player.
I agree. As Charleyfarley said, it was very unfair that our lasses didn't get into the WSL and despite losing some of our best players they have continued to look strong. One wonders at the decision making, as surely the commercial attraction of a team from LINCOLN (no offence to Lincoln, lovely place!) does not compare with the potential catchment area for Sunderland/Newcastle?
They do not get paid. I know that at times they have been packing bags at Tesco's to try and get funds. It seems to cross both boundaries between Amateur and professional as I know some of the lasses play for other teams during the summer break (in Scandinavia for instance) and they get a nominal fee for that.
