It's not an anti-mag thing, but i'm watching Wigan demolish the mags.. No particular big name players, just a team playing well. But look at their last 6 games. Wigan 4-0 Mags,....1st half esp, battered the team in 4th Fulham 2-1 Wigan....lost by single goal Arsenal 1-2 Wigan...beat the team in 3rd Wigan 1-0 Man U.....beat the champions elect Chelsea 2-1Wigan...lost by a single goal to a team in the final of the C/L and FA Cup Wigan 2-0 Stoke.... Has anyone got a logical explanation to all this?
Think it's the Sunderland syndrome mate, beat or play well against the good teams and get beat by the teams who aren't so great. Thought the barcodes were terrible mind maybe that'll be the excuse for them, taking nothing away from Wigan though they played really well maybe Martinez and Wigan have finally clicked into gear, just in time as well.
Just seen something that tickles my childish sense of humour... The first 45 mins were up, the score was 3-0, then the official holds up the board with a big no.4 on it....so Wigan duly went on a scored the 4th.. Childish i know..
They do this every year though. Its as if they don't start to give a **** until the end of February, then they they try like **** to swim against the tide and survive. It's extreme Masochism? Lol I hope they survive now though as they have performed against all the odds and deserve their place at the elite table of football.
I saw the goals last night and loved the way they just kept playing short crisp passes and had one man Check Tiote completely baffled. Pay close attention he is in every shot looking like a little boy lost.
Tbf i think wigan just need one very good defender and a good striker and they'll be a mid-table team in my opinion
Think they do so well against good sides because the good team are attacking alot and pushing men forward and usually with a high line, means there's space round the back and openings for counter attacks. Us against Man City highlights this especially our third goal. We've struggled against wolves, Boston Villa recently because they just keep men behind the ball and its difficult for ua to break through them with the players we have currently.
I knew we'd underestimate them. Just knew it. They're one of the most in-form teams in the league at the moment and if we didn't give 100% we were going to be battered. To me, this just proves how much of a factor psychology plays in football. The pure power of the mind alone can mean the difference between CL contenders and relegation battlers. It's remarkable. I don't think Wigan could keep it up, as while they're playing out of their skin high on confidence, it fatigues you mentally. It all balances itself out in the end. Mind you, Wigan do have that advantage when it comes to teams underestimating them. Virtually every top team will think they just have to turn up to beat them, so when Wigan turn out to be a far more difficult challenge, they can use that element of surprise to take advantage. That's one benefit a lot of mid-table and top teams don't have, as generally, you know what to expect and can therefore avoid underestimating. Their formation has also helped. 3-4-3 allows for a potent attack before falling back into a 5-4-1 to defend. However, Martinez is relying on Wigan's high confidence and impetus to pull this formation off, as it's very mentally and physically draining. They couldn't keep it up forever, but they're taking advantage of it in the short final run in.
Too much analytical claptrap Chappaz, both are form teams at moment. They played better, took their chances, end of.
If you're too stupid to be able to understand the specific factors involved then that's your problem, not mine.
11 against 11. Determination should be the only driving force for a competitive team. Wigan sinking Newcastle flying high. Both had massive rewards to gain from the result. As a 70+ who has watched, played, coached and officiated at games I apologise for my lack of ignorance of psychobabble.
I don't know why you're talking about 'psychobabble'. Everything I said is extremely simple and very straightforward, so if you consider it 'babble' then it would simply suggest that you aren't very clever. Let me break my post down to make it simpler for you: 1). The mindset of the players is an incredibly controlling factor over their physical footballing performance, allowing poor quality players to play like title contenders and vise versa 2). Teams underestimate Wigan and that allows them to use the element of surprise when opponents arrive and find Wigan far tougher than they expected 3). The 3-4-3 formation works extremely well but it requires considerable concentration and physical performance, especially from the wingers. That means it's difficult for a team to keep it up all season (otherwise everyone would be doing it), but Wigan are pulling it off for the last few weeks of the season to keep themselves out of the relegation zone. It's basically textbook football stuff really. Commachio asked "Has anyone got a logical explanation to all this?" so I've tried to provide more in-depth thoughts, if that's okay with you?
Taken from Joe Harvey's coaching manualon't worry about the other lot - just score more than them and we will win. Wembley 1951 Team Captain. Or: If you dont't let them have the bloody bal they"ll never score. Hungary 1967or8. Team Manager. Good results were obtained on both occasions. Both OK results for NUFC.
