Iam sorry but I think either you have not read my post carefully or you missunderstand..the ill feeling that exists TO THIS DAY (not ten yrs ago) between EFC towards your club had nothing to do with top of the table rivalry. It was a specific incident triggered by violence which brought about this rather unfortunate dislike of EFC supporters by your club. The matter apparantly was not helped by the robust actions of Northumbria Police (wether justified or not and trust me I am the last person who would criticise the Police) Whatever the perception of your club is in other geographical areas like Greater Manchester or the Capital, I cannot comment on but trust me I know exactly how you are perceived down here on Merseyside
West Ham fans hate you because you threw a petrol bomb at them in the 80's and that had **** all to do with league positions. You are generally despised across the nation precisely because of your earlier post chapped knob. You all think up there in DelusionWorld that you are a true competitors to the man Utd, Liverpool, arsenal and chelseas but they just laugh at you. You haven't won **** all worth bragging about since 1955. You haven't won the title since 1926. You are less successful than Southampton, Pompey or us over the past 50 years, yet you all go on like your the top English club. Your fans have no sense of humility or intelligence and you are viewed as a joke outside of the Gateshead border. Your club has had one very good season and all of a sudden your man utds equal. 2 years ago you were relegated you simple **** Muppet. However, I imagine this message will fall on dead ears, as you and your kin don't want to hear the truth. So, carry on making bell ends of yourselves. It simply amuses the **** out of all the rest of us.
Yeah you're probably right. The media hype only added fuel to the fire. Many of the top 4 clubs at the time were especially pissed off by it as we were there direct rivals, so it only made it worse. That EFC stuff I personally can't comment on, as I've never heard about it so I don't know. I'm speaking about thoughts outside of that Everton-related incident.
No. Not 'me' you absolute helmet. If a select group of scummy arseholes decide to cause violence then it has absolutely nothing to do with any mags who steer well clear of it. As much as it pisses you off, we were true competitors to Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea for many, many years, not too long ago. And guess what, we're currently ahead of Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs in the table looking for a Champions League spot once again. I'm well aware it'll annoy you, and believe me many mags have been humbled by the relegation, but it's just a fact that we're back up there near the top again, just like we've been a number of times in the Premier League. By trophies we are the 8th most successful club in England, regularly battling near the top of the table with adventures into the greatest European tournaments. Get over it please. And it's ironic that every top 4 club also calls each other delusional, which returns nicely to my previous point. If you've fought it out with the top clubs for positions then they will grow to dislike you and call you every name under the sun. If you don't give them a reason to be pissed off, then they won't have a bad word to say against you. Just part and parcel of football. Btw, I've spoke to a lot of fans of other clubs, and virtually all of them want us to finish in one of the CL spots. Chelsea fans, Spurs fans, Man Utd fans, Man City fans, Arsenal fans, all of them. So we're obviously not as hated as you make out. What truth? That we're the 8th most successful club of all time, past and present European contenders and ex-title challengers? I'll hear that truth all day. It's a shame that this thread has had to go down the Newcastle vs Sunderland route but as I had to defend our club from Biffa's comments it was a dead-cert that Cest would eventually be along to throw **** at the fan.
if your up there next season maybe then you can start gloating mate, but one good season in god knows how long does"nt count for **** all
Cests origional thread was a discussion about others perception of our club, I felt the need to pass on my comments from a Merseyside Perspective, because I happened to add a comment regarding Merseyside Clubs perception of Newcastle, did not mean I was being provocative..the origional discussion was never about your lot. So why did you feel the need to jump in and defend your club, as I said in my first post on this thread (please read it ) it was never meant as a dig, but meant as a general observation. Chap you need to chill sunshine...and not get too upset when folks like MUSH and CEST point out the TRUTH
Not gloating. Just stating facts to counter-act Cest's statements. I don't know where we'll be next year, but considering that we're up here this year, and have been numerous times in the past, maybe we're entitled to give ourselves a little bit of credit as a big club? Maybe 'defend' was the wrong word. I didn't see your comment as a dig to be honest, but I just wanted to nip in with my view of why I think some fans of so many big clubs (like Liverpool) don't like us. That's all.
Chappedknob. My post was for Sunderland fans about Sunderland fans and the only inevitable part to it was the fact a great big craa ****wit, and you were odds on favourite let me tell you, would take it upon himself to offer thoughts and opinions neither sought nor welcomed. I wouldn't be bitter about your club if you won the champions league numbfuck. I would despise you if you were northern premier league as I dislike it and pricks like you who support (albeit from an armchair most of the time) them. Does this help at all? Or would more pictures have helped your tiny brain?
Chappaz v Cest, cracker. MonsMush, if you're still reading, I had no idea we were hated by clubs from daarn saaf who have no clear reason to hate us, is this a widespread opinion? In my personal experience, a lot of fans like us and adopted us as their second team back in the day of the entertainers, and that has kind of stuck for a lot of people. Obviously Spurs and Chelsea fans are going to hate us as we're currently threatening their Champions League qualification. BTW, I'm the first to admit O'Neill is a top manager, I was gutted when you appointed him and I definitely rank him in the top 6 in the League if he is given all the tools he asks for.
I never mentioned Southern teams directly, I suggested that the media circus around Keegan and the 'Toon Army' annoyed a lot of big clus and their followers, when gates went from 13k to 30k, and suddenly the Toon fans were these wonderful, passionate loyalists. I accept that this wasn't your fans fault, but this new generation believed it (being out of touch with the clubs history), peddled it, and caused the problems. For the record, a few Spurs lads over here, and they seem to have a bit of respect for you, although they still see use the 'deluded' tag. As we all know, a minority can cause an opinion, unquestionably this happened to the Toon, we both had 13-16k crowds, then we both had a boom, you lot with Keegan, us with the new stadium, but we never had people claiming we were 'as big as Liverpool' and such. Most of your guys on here aren't that kind, but many, many are in the real world.
Yeah I think a lot of people still try to live on past glories to be honest, I prefer to focus on the now. I'm not old enough to remember Newcastle having any kind of crowds below the 40k mark, so it does seem strange that the numbers went up that dramatically. The delusion tag is definitely one earned by a minority, but I still see threads on Newcastle forums and they make it obvious to me why they get the tag, a vocal few are really really stupid
Mind you, whilst the claim of us being passionate loyalists might have been slightly premature in the late 90s, you can't argue that we've certainly lived up to the tag we gave ourselves to some degree. Through ups and downs the attendances have been huge, and even in the Championship they reached massive levels.
We all have them marra, but you guys went crazy with it in the Keegan era, like I say the new blood overlooked 35-40 years of failure and dived into the media circus. 'Aye we're git massif', the reality being a year earlier Keegan had saved the club from League 1 (Division 3 at the time), a few weeks early 13k or so had turned up. I have no qualms with clubs gaining new fans, indeed, or average attendance is close to double since we moved to the SOL (all us old Roker Parkers know the old lady was rarely full, even when capacity was reduced), it's the way these people presented your club in the public eye. Liverpool are starting to get the tag with the '18 leagues, 5 Euro cups' stuff, but they are still winning trophies (and always have) and they are historically head and shoulders above clubs like ours. This caused alienation back in the day, and led to most of the country pissing themselves when you blew it. **** sticks. Chappaz, I don't think anyone doubts the passion or commitment of either of our fan-bases, but that's a slightly different debate.
You're bound to find Man United fans wherever you go Cestria, that's what happens when you have the world's largest sporting fan base. I've met my fair share of Sunderland fans, majority of them probably when I was overseeing a shipping project at the Port of Tyne. I don't have a bad word to say about any of them, genuinely good, hard working guys. I know another die hard Sunderland fan too who has kids in abundance and lives in Stoke for his sins, one of the nicest guys I have ever met, sincerely I can't speak highly enough of him, such a humble guy. For one reason or another, the same can't be said for a few of you on here, constantly hostile and absolutely no conversational skills. With that being said, that's apparent on most football forums so I'm not pointing fingers at just you lot. Any time I say something on here though it's "Oi Terry F*ckwit" or "Terry Hardheeed" like it's my real name and I'd get offended by such elementary level insults. For what it's worth, I'd class your supporters as better perceived in public than most big clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, West Ham, Leeds, Newcastle, Chelsea, STOKE and if I'm being honest United fans too. You can add a load more to that list (Not City, they don't count as a big club) but that's just a few to go off.
Off topic Terry, but i'm looking at 2-1 United, Rooney first goal for Monday, 40/1 (I have a £50 free bet) Fancy it?
Must admit Terence I dont often agree with what you have to say, but have no problems at all with your comments above..good post !
MONsMush Rooney first scorer any game is a decent bet - especially if Young is playing, because Rooney takes our spot kicks. The pessimist in me can't see a win though, but that's probably because of what I watched last weekend against Everton. If you're betting £50, we have been known to let a few people down this season but again, Fergie does it the hard way and nobody will be surprised if we hammer City to seal the title (not mathematically, obviously, but more or less). Biffa - thanks, sorry about your location.
For info, in Manchester - besides being caught up in Manchester rivalry (in recent times) the perception of other clubs from a United fan's perspective is that most of us will immediately think of Kev Keegan's rant whenever we think of Newcastle, we think they're a well-supported club but most of us probably consider them as like an annoying (but harmless) dog that just keeps pissing in your shoes. For Sunderland, 10 years ago ask a United fan what they thought of Sunderland and he'd have no opinion, now though it's like "oh you mean Man United B-Team, yeah, great side". We have an affection for Sunderland to a certain degree because of Evans/Welbeck/Simpson and Richardson, Oshea, Brown, Campbell obviously too. The only gripe I really had was with Quinn, you had a load of ex-United talent there to form a basis of a good side and some drunken idiot running the show, now he's gone, you've got a chance to move on. Don't get me wrong, I can see why you idolised the guy as a player and for saving you when you were nearly goners, but jeez was that guy out of his depth when you made the step up.
