Well it's a simple question and is sure to stimulate debate. Time to put your cards on the table. Read this article. What do you think? http://www.setanta.com/ie/Articles/2012/04/24/Harris-on-the-verge/gnid-139769/ I expect a lot of traffic for this one.
What is the measurement? Tactics, success or management skills? Can you really judge one against the other when MM has only had one season with us? Malky is still in his honeymoon period and has already had questions raised about no plan B, not using the squad available and lack of transfer activity in the Jan window. I'd suggest we leave this until he's had a few more seasons to build, if he then moves us to the premier league then MM will have my vote. If he doesn't then it will be judged on final position in the league over the period. At the moment MM is on target to (hopefully) get to the play offs and another crack at the play off final. So how about leaving it a week or so before making comparisons and base the debate on fact. Only seems fair.
Cheers H I was starting to look out of my window expecting a lynch mob at any second. I though for a minute I has just imagined the image.
i think that DJ is a good manager when you think of all the players he has had to let go over the years, MM is another good manager for what he has achieved in his first season but if i had to pick one then i would have to pick DJ as a little bit better...
MM has aged under pressure. Maybe City is like your dog. If you stay there too long, you start to get that look about you
Both in my opinion stick to their beliefs particullary around team selection so for me its very frustrating. Sometimes I find myself wishing that they,d give youth a chance to prove their worth, Darcy Blake, Ramsey, Harris, Raills, Mathews. As the old saying goes: "In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king". Just about all of us could wear the eye patch!! LOL
Sounds like an exam question: DJ and MM, compare and contrast in fewer than 10,000 words. You have 3 hours and your time begins .............. NOW. Both are their own men and very focussed on their game plan. Largely, they recruit players to execute their game plan but will put a square peg in a round hole so as not to deviate from that plan (Jay going off in the playoffs). Both have their favourites irrespective of how they are playing and will 'blank' players, even if they are playing well (Darcy in both cases). In different ways they are good man managers, getting the best out of awkward or under-performing players, though MM appears more even handed with players and as yet we haven't seen him turn on anyone (Matthews). They both seem to have good relationships with the owners. Neither had a reliable 'plan 'B'' though MM has been more flexible in changing between 442 and 451. MM is much more of a diplomat than DJ, better with the fans and the press. MM also seems more emotional about things, expressing his feelings in a way that endears him to most fans where DJ was impassive / expressionless. MM appears to have more faith in youth and looks to develop players where DJ looked for more mature players for his needs. Time will tell whether MM's approach can deliver the ultimate goal where DJ's failed.
remote has basically summed it all up in the previous post....but at the end of the day if MM gets us promoted by the end of his tenure then i guess its' 1-0 to MM, if not its' about 3-3 as both have 'scored' and 'conceded'....also MM has been able to analyse where DJ went wrong.....relationship with the press/putting up with primadonas and basically not being a miserable sod........and we'll win Saturday.
Too early to judge Malky yet, unless he gets us to the Premier League this year. Overall I think DJ is in the top three managers we have had. We should never forget the transfer dealings from day 1 when he arrived. Yes he had his failings, who hasn't, but he helped save this club and progressed every season. With the talent available last season he should have got us up and then everyone would have said he was the best ever.
Agreed Hampshire. DJ had an eye for a bargain. In the early days he was forced to sift through numbers to get a couple of good ones. He also made a couple of dodgy, knee jerk signings. MM hasn't signed any real muppets and chose to sign no-one in January as he couldn't get who he wanted. DJ sometimes took whatever he could get. DJ opperated under a different financial backdrop, so difficult to compare.
The biggest difference between the two is that the players under Malky are playing for him, whereas many of those under DJ were playing for themselves. Don't know if anyone else sees it the same way, but there's a totally different feeling about the club this year from us fans through the players, management, right through to the boardroom. Long may it continue.
