My husband says he went to the Royalty on Southcoates Lane and was a member of the ABC Minors.
At the cinema they played the Minors song every Saturday morning.

" We are the boys and girls well known as the minors of the ABC
And every Saturday all line up to see the films we like and shout aloud with glee
We love to have a sing -song just a happy crowd are we
We are all pals together we are the minors of the ABC"

He is driving me crazy belting it out!

Great stuff! I was an ABC Minor at the Regal. We used to go door-to-door around Summergangs Road, Lee Street and Westcott Street, collecting jam jars - walk right along Holderness Road and Witham to take them to the pickle factory at North Bridge.
We got a ha'penny for each jar and thus got the money to get into the pictures (and some goodies) and a ha'penny trolley-bus ride back home.

Was the Dorchester the one that was just up from the Trog Bar(Manchester Hotel), next to Carmichaels?

I remember that one having a Bettle on the roof when Herbie was released.

At the Regal/ABC they used to a Saturday morning kids club, where parents dumped their kids for £1 and picked them up a couple of hours later after doing their shopping. There was no supervision and it was carnage in there, my sister picked up a nasty ice-cream related eye injury. <laugh>

Berkeley on Bilton Grange (went there many times as a spotty kid when it first opened), Astoria, Dorchester (now occupied by Biarritz - very posh in its day), Royalty Southcoates Lane (now a Lidl or sommat) ABC Regal, Tower, Regent (both Anlaby Road and flleepits), Criterion (two lions on pedestals to front facade) corner George Street & Grimston Street.

Calvert Lane and Calvert Road at that roundabout. Lane running from it towards Boothferry Park and Road running from it down to County Road. Priory Road then starts at Priory pub and runs down to Cott. Just to confuse things though, the house numbers start at the roundabout, count up the length of Calvert Road, and then just carry on when you start Priory Road.

I only remember it being a Gateway supermarket(who became Sommerfield), my gran lived just round the corner in Lomond Road and I used to go there on my bike at a weekend to play footie in the ten foot. It might have been a Clifford Dunn's before that, but I can only remember the one under the car park on Prospect Street.

Clifford Dunn first started up in a former cinema/theatre (Princes Hall I believe it may have been) on George Street, that then became a Hofbrauhaus & Oddysee before it mysteriously burnt down - now a vacant plot used as a car park.
