The 2012 United Kingdom local elections are due to take place across England, Scotland and Wales on 3 May 2012. Elections will be held to 131 English local authorities, all 32 Scottish local authorities and 21 of the 22 Welsh councils, alongside three mayoral elections including the London mayoralty and the London Assembly. Referendums will also be held in 11 English cities to determine whether or not to introduce directly elected mayors. ............................................................................................................................. Now I know why we have councillors and I know the theory behind them but, is this system out dated, respected and giving us what we want and need? Have you ever had the need to go and see your local councillor and did you get what you wanted? Are you a councillor? If you feel its outdated what system would you like?
Mornin Syd yes we do need Councillors have talked to mine about local issues, such as slum landlords eventually got things changed. But as everything we get the good bad and indifferent the only difference I would make is to have councillors and mps for that matter answerable to local committees but that my own political beliefs.
I live in deepest North Yorkshire which is such a Tory heartland that none of the other parties bother to stand. I therefore don't get a vote and consequently have never met nor have a scooby who my local councillor is. That's democracy for you!
You do get a vote and if you choose not to use it because it's in a Tory heartland that's your fault. It seems to me that you only want to vote if you can win!!!!! I live in a Liberal strong hold who I think are a waste of space but I vote at every election. One day things will change and they will be kicked out.
I think that what he was saying is that the other parties don't even contest the election, so the tory councillors get in automatically...I do find this very stange mind, as I live in a Labour heartland but they are still contested by other parties...
It is true - my councillors have been elected uncontested for the last couple of (non)elections. We smply get a note telling us when the (non)election is and the name of the one candidate. I don't know why nobody stands against them mind - we are in the middle of the countryside so getting around the constituency is a bit of an effort and I think the other parties simply can't be bothered given their chances of winning are so small
