    It's not just Alan Pardew and thousands of Newcastle fans that remain uncertain about the possible permutations regarding qualification for Europe next season.

    In answer to emailed requests for guidance, the Premier League confirmed on Friday that they were "seeking clarification" from the competition organisers, UEFA.

    The United boss said earlier this week that:

    "What I do know is that this European qualification is about as complicated as it gets – we need Carol Vorderman to work this one out. Let’s just say there’s a bit of confusion over it in my mind.

    You’re talking about qualifying games for the two competitions, for example when we might come in to the qualifiers. There seems to be a little bit of confusion over which position gets you where.

    "I’m not having a dig at the FA or anything – the most important thing for us is to win the game, then I suppose the Chelsea-Barcelona thing all sorts itself out."

    Some of the confusion has come from the appearance of conflicting information as to whether the FA Cup winner automatically takes a place in the Group Stage of the Europa League - or the side finishing highest in the Premier League and entering that competition avoids the qualifying stages.

    Something wrong somewhere when the Premier League bosses don't know who gets what and how.

    The people that run it all are confused by it, it's not surprising that the ordinary guy on the street doesn't understand it all.
