Slater took over 2 years ago? Who knew! God I can't stand Darren Lewis. But great news RE Powell. I just hope he holds off signing until he is promised a 10mil war chest
Both articles were good reads. Most interesting thing was the fact we've had no 0-0's in the league this season. Doubt many other teams can say that.
They say that good managers stand out above their teams and when you think of the club you think of the manger rather thantheir star player. This deflects a lot of criticism away from young sensitive players and allow the team to perform without the focus being on an individual player flaw in performance. Remember how Mourinho made the focus on him by by his utterances which enabled a far from flawless Chelsea team to aspire to heights. When you think of ManU you think of Fergie not necessarily of Rooney or Scholes. People in the street know of Charlton and Chris Powell, not of Kermorgant or Morrison, which is exactly the place to be. Powell is a manager who, whether we admit it or not, has largely been able to put together teams which have gone out and performed this season. Yes he has made mistakes but so do all young managers. That we have a manager whose name appears as the headline of the club, who the fans cheer for at every home victory (Glovepup you have to play Van Halen -Jump at the end of the match tomorrow) is a testament to the guy at the end of his first full season as manager. As for Slater tying him to a chair, I am not certain that image is quite right, but howabout the first freeman of the new Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The Independent article is really good (apart from one or two tiny factual errors). One thing it doesn't mention, though, is that most of the Summer signings were made early - the second half of last season was clearly spent earmarking players to sign, and Powell and Slater wasted no time in getting the deals done. Thus the gelling happened before the season kicked off, and we were able to hit the ground running as we did against Bournemouth. How nice it has been to have a defence that we can actually have confidence in, after the disasters of the last few years. Powell is clearly as good a coach of the defence as he was a defender.
Great articles. Its true in as much as as soon as we went 1 up at Carlisle, we all seemed to know we had won it . One thing that came out of an interview with Steve Kavanagh last week, was that he and Chris sat down towards the end of last season and looked at the out-ot-contract players, and CP stated to kavanagh that there was only one player that was a maybe to re-sign - all the others he wanted out, to try to 'cleanse' the disease that had infected the club - i wonder who that was ? Semedo?
I thought Semedo took so long to sign for the Wendies because he was trying to get an improved offer from us ?
