totally agree munky. its an easy excuse to say he gives away lots of fouls. so do many strikers! its his all round game and ability of sticking that round thing in the onion bag that he's good at among other things. i'm going to suggest that if he played for a london premier league club he'd be in.

In 3 premier league seasons Carroll has scored 20 goals. In the championship carroll scored 17 goals.
Holt has scored 13 premier league goals and got 21 goals last season in the championship. After his championship season and 11 prem goals in a season Carroll was worth £35m.
What in his career has been better than Holt. Apart from the fact that holt started his rise later.

For me, saying Carroll and Crouch should be ahead in the pecking order is an unjustifiable statement! Simply put, this season it has been proved beyond any doubt that Carroll is UTTER ****E and whilst Crouch is good, Holt is better! But really, why do we complain about Holt's exclusion (He is probably good enough to make the squad in some form) when Ruddy simply should be second choice 'keeper! Green and Carson? If Holt is too old then surely Green is too!

I rememeber against Germany in the World Cup, Capello decided 'we need goals, let's bring on Heskey!' When there was Crouch and one or two beter strikers on the pitch. <doh>

That's an interesting stat. Just shows what being at a big club can do for your career despite not being that great.

Sorry to keep bringing him up as an example, but Danny Wellbeck has scored nine goals for ManUre in 36 games - and that includes the one from six inches on Sunday - added to the six in 26 games for Sunderland.
Fraizer Campbell has scored all of five goals in 38 games for Sunderland.

Can somebody please, please at least attempt to tell me another reason apart from the ManUre link why these two are in the England squad?

I guess one of the assumptions is that having two or three players from the same side may enhance cohesiveness. Chances are few and far between in international games and if the rooney welbeck partnership has produced nearly 40 goals and countless opportunties, then it may be better than simply combining the two highest english scorers. The other assumption is that the teams that the players are picked from are more similar to each other and can adapt more easily to playing with each other. (I'm not saying this is case, just some thoughts, and of course, players from outside the big six or seven clubs are picked).
Also I'm not saying that Holt should not be in the squad, just trying to think of possible reasons.

i know its not the done thing to do but i shall attempt to give andy carroll some support; not to play for england but to defend him from people saying he is ****e. i do not believe he is ****e. the issue he has is that liverpool simply don't play to his strengths and his confidence is shot to pieces. stick him in a team where the manager knows what he is doing, and he would look a good player again. just my opinion but seeing as stuart pearce doesn't know what he is doing, it would be pointless picking him! if lambert ever got the chance to sign him i'd hope he did, so long as the fee was respectable and more what he is worth, say £5m max <ok>

To bear out some of your thoughts to a certain extent, Peter Crouch has scored 108 league goals in 385 matches but 22 goals for England in 42 appearances.

I agree, I fully expect him to come good. Even at a low ebb, he was still getting into good positions, and often hitting the woodwork or pulling out great saves (as well as lots of howlers) if a few had gone in and gerard had been playing throughout the season, I don't think everyone would be writing him off.

he just needs a manager to believe in him again and play him regularly, with wide players giving him the kind of service he needs. he's a one trick pony (tail) in many ways but i've seen him play some wonderful football on the deck too - he isn't all about his phenomenal heading power. he can link play but i believe he needs to leave liverpool to fulfil any potential he has. its not the right club for him and he's not right for them. never was in fact. always a bizarre signing.

No offence taken, you're entitled to your opinion. For the record I think Holt deserves a place on the plane. I don't think he will go because the FA and co haven't got the balls to pick him, they will just go with big name players from big clubs.

One thing I will say is you cannot be sure Holt is NCFC through and through, yes he clearly enjoys playing for us but let's not forget he is not a local lad and is from up north where a lot of his family is still located. He has never earned big bucks in football and he has to think of his life after retirement, if a club came in for him and offered him 40-50k per week he might be tempted to move for one last big pay day to give his family a wealthy life after his playing days.

I'm a huge Holt fan, the guy is a canary legend, but players come and go, that's just the way it is.

I was listening to talksport the other day an am not sure who was on, but they were saying that Andy Carroll should be ahead of Holt because he has scored more 'important' goals against top sides. Did they not see Holt score against Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle or Man U? He also still has a chance to score against Arsenal too. That would make 5 of the top 7. Not bad for a fat lad eh?

Am I right in thinking Carroll has not scored against a top 6 side this season?

What a load of rubbish that is (about Carroll) He's scored four league goals for Liverpool, how can that statement about his important goals even make sense?

What it boils down to is that he scored the late winner against Everton in the cup (which the grimy Carragher said was worth £35 million in itself <doh> ) Somehow his extremely disappointing season is thus forgiven.

Home and away against Everton as well <ok> And not one of his goals have been scrappy, he's banged them in with both feet and with his head, shown some deft touches and amazing skill and his penalty under pressure against Blackburn was as perfect a spot-kick as I've ever seen.

But STILL it remains laughable the suggestion he should even be considered <doh>
