Why do people always have Wigan as almost certain to go down?

They always fight, they have a fantastic manager and they always find a few out.

IMO they only reason they aren't mid table is because they don't have a good striker up front. If they could get a striker that can score 12-13 goals in the right games, then they'd be mid table IMO

They play some great, exciting football, and IMO probably some of the best football in the league.

Forget ****ing Swansea. Wigan play some great, attacking, flowing football and make something of it. They go forward no matter than the score at what the time, and always look so calm and composed.

I've always liked Wigan and admire Martinez.

Delighted for Wigan. Hopefully they can push Villa further to the bottom

Because they only start playing at the end of the season when they are threatened with going down.

I like Martinez, he's one of the few genuine managers in the league but there is just something about Wigan I don't like. They always seem to be poorly supported team and never really do anything until the last 3 months of the season.

    Not really a crap club.

They are a football club in a small town which is predominantly interested in rugby. They are punching well above their weight, had it not been for the nice new-ish stadium they wouldn't look out of place in League 2 in terms of stature. They are a small club and none of their fans would deny that, but they play good football like the OP said.

Martinez is also a very good manager, in fact I'd put him in the top 5 managers in the Premier League. He showed loyalty to Wigan when Villa came knocking, he started the revolution at Swansea and he has tactically outsmarted the best of them. He will get a top club, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's Chelsea manager or Liverpool manager next season.

I like Wigan personally since Martinez took over. I like Martinez and his footballing principles. I like carpet football end of. Don't get me wrong, within some games there are times when you need to be a bit direct. But in the main I don't want to watch the hump it theory. People rightly rave about Swansea this season. They play lovely stuff. Rodgers quite rightly gets a lot of praise but I'm sure the Swansea fans will tell you this isn't a recent thing. It was started by Martinez and he left them and Rodgers in great shape when he went.

I think the expectation they'll go down is because they have had to sell off their top players year after year, and simply because they operate on one of the smaller budgets in the league due to a few factors. One being they can't get the crowds other sides get. Rugby league is massive in Wigan so they have it a bit harder than some other clubs.

You have to admire the job Martinez has done for Wigan and the money Dave Whelan invested to get them to the Premier League.

They can't fill their tiny stadium though - real shame.

I honestly would prefer to have teams in the PL who can provide better support - full stadiums create atmosphere and atmosphere creates great occasions... not the sort of half-baked rubbish seen at Wigan, Bolton & Blackburn.

Thank you SB, I didn't think it needed to be explained. Seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Don't want to blow my own trumpet, but I did say that if Wigan were within touching distance in the last 5 games, they'd stay up. Looking a good call now!

I still think they are crap. Imagine the global audience tuning in and seeing a half full tiny stadium. The prem would be a better place with a so called 'big club' in their place. I add the likes of Bolton, Blackburn and QPR to that list too as they get on my tits too... Along with Fulham..

Got a bit of a soft spot for Fulham and QPR, even after the tonking they gave us.
