Well, I moved to Hull, through choice not work, nearly 10 years ago, so, guess my answer to the question???
Does Anlaby count as that is where I grew up, though partial to Beverley as I was born in the hospital there
I live in Beverley myself but I find the area pretty boring to be fair, although it's a nice town to bring kids up in. I agree with the comments re no music store or electricals now Currys is shut, though Tescos own brand is usually pretty good for TV's and I got a nice Dell laptop there a few weeks back.
Hornsea is nice for a few hours visit on a sunny day if you can stand hundreds of wessies surrounding you speaking their lark ...... Moving back to Hull in a few weeks which would be a nice change ... amazing city just people don't see it like that after ****ing Kirsty & Phil ****ed the reputation up York is my favourite place to visit though
It's a bit harsh on them, Hull wasn't exactly known as northern England's answer to Paris before they arrived was it.
To be honest it's not really difficult having lived in Sheffield, York and Beverley I can say without any doubt in my mind that Beverely is leagues ahead for a few reasons. The Schools are some of the best in the country. The Westwood provides an excellent getaway from what is a busy town. The people are generally extremely friendly and nice, I must say I will admit to been brought up in a bubble, it's one of the only places where you could honestly walk around with a plastic bag full of money and not feel remotely vulnerable. Ok, i see your point it's hardly the hot bed of youthful entertainment but that aside it really is top class.
I think Beverley is pretty great too, yes if you want to get **** faced then maybe there are better places but there's so much more to life and it ticks all the other boxes.
If I was talking houses/nicest area, I'd probably say Swanland. If I was talking inner-city housing, you won't go far wrong with the Salisbury St area amongst the Avenues in Hull. Leeds is only really a 'shopping destination' - not a lot all else, tourism is based on a load of history with nothing to do with Leeds. I mean, the Royal Armouries - they were kept in Hull! As for the station, I agree - dank, dark and depressing. Sheffield - It's centre is on it's outskirts! that aside, it has a great transport network and the winter gardens are a cool feature. I do like York, but when places get this 'upper class' tag like Beverley and Harrogate with York, it tends to see it's inhabitants take a different, upper view on things, which makes things like customer service fall way below par, bordering on rude. You can't fault it for scenery and things to do though and it has a great park N' ride system in place. Johnfirth - Admiral on a Fri/Sat night - You were in the wrong area!!! You should have gone to the old town. My girlfriend's uncle police's the old town at weekends and told me the police are called into action more in Beverley on a weekend night than they are in Hull's old town. As for what you said RE: High St, Museum's Quarter, Whitefriargate etc area, imagine all of Hull being like that, had Adolf Hitler never been born. York was very lucky. Hull is different when comparing Yorkshire cities because the feel is different due to it being low-lying flat land, the West, North and 'South' Yorkshire area's are all hilly, plus Hull's old town is full of Dutch, Danish and Flemish architecture, so not your typical Yorkshire sights.
I'd say York, been at uni there and i've really got a feel for the place. Nice city with plenty to do, and for a small city the nightlife is good. Noticed when i'm at uni though i'll back Hull to the hill when i'm talking to my mates there, saying its not the dump its made out to be, has decent nightlife, mostly decent people and there are interesting places to visit. Like nights out in Leeds, the only reason why i go to Leeds as i'm not that into shopping! Find Sheffield a quirky place and enjoyed myself whenever i've been there (some football matches aside). Trip to the seaside = Scarborough. Lotsof places in Yorkshire have different things to offer, but York probably shades it overall.
Filey for me. Although it has been spoilt by lots of nasty shops and closure of the cake shop. York is also a favourite of mine.
I agree. Although from Hull, I have not been back since 1979 but on our occasional visits to family in County Durham we always go to York for a day. I always recommend York to Canadian friends who visit the UK and none have been disappointed. Another of York's attractions is the Petersgate Fishery which we always visit. We'll be back in the UK this June and I intend to revisit some of my childhood haunts in Hull.
