I have to admit to having enormous respect for your two great managers! I never met Sir Bobby, but I've read numerous accounts from those who did, and described him as a most approachable man, with time for everyone! I've also read several reports of Sir Alf being described as aloof and unapproachable to the point of rudeness! I did, however, once come into contact with this man on a train from Liverpool Street station to Ipswich for him, and either Darsham or Halesworth for me, (I lived halfway between the two!) We shared a carriage all the way to Ipswich and he chatted away quite happily to me about all sorts of things, not just football, I found him to be both charming and friendly!
alright, fair enough. all i meant is you've had a new stand built relatively recently - it could have been named then. doesn't appear to be a cyncial move from the outside anyway...
When it was built Greene King had the naming rights (I've just read that was until 2009). It was the timing of the announcement, a couple of hours after the youth category bombshell that spoilt it for me. I'm surprised other have not picked up on it.
Yorkie believe me mate I am normally the first to shout Conspiracy! I think you are reading too much into this as last weekend afterall marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary championship being won and what more fitting way of paying homage then naming the stand after the great man! If the club had let this anniversary go by without marking it in someway they would have been damned for that as well! Damned if you do, damned if you don't!
hmm, agree with warky... don't think its anything other than a nice gesture. can understand the cynicism but i think you've got to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one yorkie!
I have to admit, cynical thoughts did cross my mind when i haeard this, but i was delighted about it too. Not a lot to be done about it though, I'm just glad that the club has now officially recognised two of english football's greatest servants.
No FM, I have an urgent appointment with a paint brush! Will be going to the Leicester game (time off for good behaviour)!
This is an excellent post that I discovered on the EADT website. I agree with every word! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What's the point of having an academy anyway when Jewell simply ignores young talent & returns to his Dads Army philosophy. I am realistic & don't expect a return to the days when we competed regularly with the likes of Real Madrid & Barcelona in europe & sure I will never be in the position to find it funny when we missed 3 penalties in the same match against Manchester Utd - as we won 6-0 anyway. What really hurts is the abandonment of the principles which once allowed us to punch above or weight & compete with the best. It is worth remembering that the young Alex Ferguson was once invited down to Portman Road by Bobby Robson to learn 'the Ipswich way' !!!!! This was something he never forgot & his admiration for his mentor never wavered. I'm sure I actually saw pride on his face as he helped a cancer stricken Robson to the stage to receive his lifetime award. Similarly Jose mourhinho always acknowledged a debt of gratitude to BR who took him under his wing at Barca - who also even took time to arrange for a 15 year old AVB to come to Portman Road to see how we done things. OK he was not successful at Chelsea but the reasons for that are well ducumented & the fact remains that at the age of 33 he won a european trophy - while the silverware collected by Ferguson & Mourinho is almost unprecedented. As regards the young players they were made to feel Ipswich was their home & they built up a loyalty accordingly. A young Kevin Beattie joined after a trial with Shankleys Liverpool when he had to find his own way from Carlisle to the training ground at Anfield - a daunting prospect for a 15 year old - joining a host of other young hopefuls. However when he came here he was actually met off the train by.......Bobby Robson. Being made to feel wanted & important was the key which led to a lifetimes devotion to the club & the area. Eric Gates was actually taken in by Robson & lived with as part of his family when he first arrived - & there are numerous other stories of his kindness & unstinting belief in the younger players who did indeed go on to make Ipswich great. I would not expect Jewell or possibly any other managed to fill the boots of Bobby Robson - he was a one off - BUT to abandon the principles he instilled at the club & sully the legacy of such an inspirational man is something I & I'm sure many other true fans will neever forgive him for ????
It is your cluub and you name stands after who you like. I have no problem with Bobby Robson and Alf Ramsey, both were excellent, my point was it would have been better to have celebrated their achievements while they were alive. If you think Mr.Burley warrants another fine, at least he will be there to see it open.
It was Sir Bobby's request that it not happen until he'd died. I don't think Burley himself would align himself with the two greats.
i think he might have been talking about your stand warky but even so, i thought it was great when ipswich unveiled the statue to sir bobby and let him do the unveiling - all too often great players and managers are remembered in this form after they've gone - its great when they get to see how much they meant whilst still alive
Dont waste your time on them jonny, in the words of the song theyve never won **** all, and thats what they just cant stomach.
