I know you guys might have discussed it before but if we finish 6th how can we get into Europe? Do we need Liverpool or Chelsea to win the FA cup? I'm confused.
I'm not even sure if I want the Europa league as everyone who is in it seems to fly down the table next season (Stoke, Fulham)

I think we need Liverpool to beat Everton in the semi-final in particular.

Of course we want it. How else do teams progress? Just need to invest, keep hold of our best players and give the youth/fringe players a chance.

Can't just keep getting 7th place until suddenly we are good enough to win the league.

Yeah I still want Europa even though it would tire us out for the league. I think we could use it to pull in quite a few good signings not to mention we'd stop some who are already here from getting their heads turned. I think we'd have quite a good chance at a real run in the competition.

I want Europa League, we'll have an increased chance of keeping our better players whilst improving the squad too.

Also, slapping Enrique, Carroll and more importantly Liverpool down a peg!! :)

If we get the Europa place, I can see us struggling a little in the league, being about 10th come january and possibly forcing MA to splash the cash on a larger squad. I think Pardew will want to go all guns blazing at Europe. He took West Ham there but fell at the first hurdle, he has a point to prove!

If Liverpool beat Everton we probably will, we have a 10 point advantage on the 6th spot and we're in cracking form.

I have not been to bothered either way about the Europa. You have to realise we ain't gonna do a Spurs and use our youth players. We're gonna be like Fulham and Stoke and go for it. Its a tough one. If you listen to the likes of Tiote, it undoubtedly influences their happiness. They are desperate to be in Europe. It also helps when signing players. The flipside is the detrimental effect on your league form if you are not set up for it or don't have the depth.

All in all I have changed my mind and I think it would be preferable. Simply because of some of the comments made since Sunday by the likes of Tiote, Ba etc. If this squad stays together another season, and is added to, it could be something special. It seems more likely that will happen if we can offer European football.

Our squad isn't a weak as it might seem.

If we can add a LB and a CB, then we'll have, as fully blooded pro's or very promising youngsters:

    Strikers:

Ba, Cisse, Best, Shola, HBA (unless you want to call him a winger)

    Left wing:

    Guittierez, Fergie

    Right Wing

HBA(if you don't call him a striker) Obertan, Sammi, Marveau

    CM

Tiote, Cabaye, Guthrie, Gosling, Vukic, Abeid, Perch, Raylor

    LB

    Newbe, Raylor, Perch, Fergie

    RB

    Santon, Simpson

    CB

Colocinni, Saylor, Willo, Newbe [Tavernier, Streete]

    GK

    Krul, Harps, Elliott

I appreciate I've repeated a couple of names, but that I don't think that's a problem if you're talking about back up players who will only play a game or two, ass opposed to starters.

It's nor the strogest squad I'v ever seen, but it isn't the weakest. A good starter and a decent cover in every position, more in some positions

THANK **** FOR SOMEBODY WITH A BRAIN!!!

We already have a damn good squad, the only place we lack depth is defence and porbably up front, the midfield is fine.

Vuckick and Ferguson rarely get games and they are both quality. Abeid hasn't had a chance either and we have versatile players.

Europe really would not stretch us that much until near the end of the season when everyone gets tired, if we even make it that far in the competition.

Whereas I do agree our squad is not as weak as some may think, there is no getting away from it struggling to cope with demands of PL season coupled with the cups at times this season. Mainly in defence but also elsewhere. Part of this has been the young players not being involved much. Whether this is because they're not ready, Pards doesn't have the faith or they're not good enough I'm not sure. I doubt its the latter though as they look talented. We do have some young talent that needs games though and I'd hope they could play their part in the Europa League campaign. Abeid, Ameobi, Ferguson, Vuckic and young Streete will all be useful next year. As long as we were willing to see if they are ready, I think we can cope along with two or three signings in the summer. They key for us is a left back and a centre back.

There are three places in the UEFA Europa League available: the FA Cup winners will enter at the Group Stage; the fifth place team in the Barclays Premier League will enter at the Play-Off stage; and the Football League Cup winners will enter at the Q3 stage.

In the event the FA Cup winners are qualified for the UEFA Champions League the FA Cup runners-up will qualify, but in the place reserved for the lowest ranking Barclays Premier League representative. The place with direct access to the Group Stage will be given to the club that finishes in the highest position in the Barclays Premier League of the clubs qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

English winners of the UEFA Europa League will enter at the Group Stage, gaining an extra domestic place only if they fail to qualify through other means for the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League. If the holders of the UEFA Europa League have already qualified for Europe, no extra domestic place will be gained.

Should the FA Cup winners, runners-up (if applicable) and the Football League Cup winners already have qualified for Europe, their place goes to the next best placed clubs in the Premier League.

If Everton get to the final, then it definitely won't go to 6th. If Liverpool get to the final it will go to 6th.

You'll have to get a bigger squad for the Europa League but it's good fun, although it was better when it was the UEFA Cup and a 2 leg knockout from the start.

Agree completely. To be honest I'd prefer the CL to go back also. Its farcical that a side finishing 4th in their domestic league can be crowned champions of Europe the next season. They're always moaning about the number of games we play, yet they are quite happy to sanction these european mini league tournaments if the money is right! I think it has certainly devalued the UEFA Cup, maybe not as much the CL.

No one gets direct access to the group stage now they've changed it again. We effectively had the FA Cup winners spot last season because when the runner up(Stoke) qualifies they only get a place in the qualification rounds. We still had to play Hearts in the first round, which is two legs, and THEN go on to the groups which is the second round. Stupid aint it? But atleast it makes more sense than groups of 5 where you play everyone once and 3 go through only to have CL teams added to make up the numbers again! <grr>
